  • Speaker: Good Times on High Street,

Those were the days, my friend. Three or four nights a week cruising downtown at about midnight with two packs of Marlboro Reds, and drinking 'til dawn. Thanks, Hat, for all the Chartreuse. Sometimes I wonder how it is that I'm still alive.

Musically, fondest memories are the Nathan Haines band fronted by Joel when Nathan was off in NY or somewhere; like a low-rent Bitches-Brew-meets-Band-of-Gypsys. That drummer Tony was a nice geezer, wasn't he?

  • Speaker: Copyright Must Change,

I prefer to beat air drums. Tried to start a band actually but it's hard to think of a name since Quiet Riot is taken.

    The Silent Knights?

  • Hard News: That Buzzing Sound,

Don't think it's been mentioned yet -- apologies if I'm wrong on that -- but last night's Sunday 's Rankin segment is up on TVNZ.

  • Hard News: That Buzzing Sound,

Gotta say, I'm grinding my teeth at Ms. Rankin's description, under the circumstances, of Ms. McAuley as a "complex and difficult friend."

And shaking my head at the opinion that:

The media had "stooped to new lows" and were largely worthless, with the exception of broadcasters Michael Laws and Paul Holmes.

Kevin Smith raves about Chris Pine.

[3410 fails to construct a decent Chris Pine / Chris Pike joke.]

  • Island Life: Effective Immediately,

This is interesting, and disingenuous by TV3

Absolutely. Whoever wrote TV3's explanation -- TV3 spokeman Roger Beaumont may be just forwarding what he's been told to say -- is either lying or so uninformed as to be incompetent to comment on the issue.

I'm not sure that the gif shows audio compression, given that in the early examples even the peaks are far from full volume?

True, except for the difference between the third (1993) and fourth (2000) examples, which shows fairly significant loss of dynamics.

That said, it's a pretty mild example by today's standards. It's a real problem. Many catalogues are currently virtually unlistenable due to ridiculously extreme compression. Post-'98 Jimi Hendrix springs to mind, but there are many others (and worse.) I'm grateful I'm not a fan of the Chilli Peppers.

BTW, Apple have specifically said that they will go easy on the compression for this year's Beatles remasters.

Where were these Spock-lovin' girls when I was a wee lad with a bowlcut, stick-out ears, and a an overly logical approach to everything?

  • Hard News: That Buzzing Sound,

You seem not to understand how this works, Gio. When a Labour member says something stupid they need to apologise, but when a National person says something stupid it should be ignored, because 'they all do it.'

Similarly, you should not accept that a National member is lying unless you have solid proof of it, but you should assume that a Labour member is lying unless you have solid proof that he's not.

I hope that clears it up.

  • Hard News: Modern Lolz,

And doesn't all the past week's 'Fawlty Towers Re-opened' hoopla point rather chillingly that way?

    If that happens...

    Seems that it won't.
