  • Hard News: Ten Times Warmer,

One click past what "even the BBC" are calling (the snigger quotes are theirs) a 'plunge' in the death toll in Iraq, we find this more qualified report form someone "on the ground".

  • Hard News: Ten Times Warmer,

Stratfor has seen indications that Iran is planning to up the ante in Iraq by supplying its militant proxies with shoulder-launched surface-to-air missiles (SAMs). ...
As long as this threat is used as a pressure tactic, negotiations between Washington and Tehran have a chance of going somewhere.

What negotiations would these be? The one's Washington continuously refuses to countenance? Whosoever Stratfor are, he/they/it sound ignorant.

  • Hard News: Ten Times Warmer,

I would never rely on anything Hersh reported

So let's pretend Mai Lai never happened, and Cheney just wants to make friends with Iran. While we're at it, can I sell you the latest radiohead album?

  • Hard News: Ten Times Warmer,

Hersh is either working for the Cheney team or lives in a land of make-believe.

Really? Since either choice is ridiculous to anyone who's followed his career, can we have option c/ "Neil has no idea what he's talking about."
(Ok the dirty double-bluff idea is amusing. We know Kissenger and Nixon pulled it, and Hersh met Kissenger in 1982, and, and and- so maybe his deep cover at the New Yorker is slipping and Hersh is about to be made Cabinet Secretary for Closing off Media Leaks. Or not.)

  • Hard News: Connecting the Box,

It's reassuring to know I'm not the only one with a stack of vinyl that hasn't seen a lot action lately. Hard to get rid of, so one of the hard solutions has to be found... I've got a reasonable set-up for digitising and I can borrow a turntable from work- it's just the time involved.
Bart: audacity has some beaut filters, eh. I've recently used their noise reduction at work to clean up a nasty buzz in some audio- amazingly successful. Taking out the crackles and pops: a lot of me old vinyl is a tad scratched as well...

  • Hard News: Connecting the Box,

Found a copy of Luxury Length going through the old record collection. Damn fine it was too. Flipping through was an odd experience: gems I'd forgotten (like the Blams, and Direen's Conch3) and things I was absolutely sure were there that somehow weren't (like the Dunedin Double ep and Double Happys "Other's Way").
But no turntable now. I'm trying to face up to reality: I don't want to go out and buy a turntable. And I dunno what to do with this stack of records.
What have y'all done? Sold 'em and saved the space? Storage in an airtight warehouse? Frisbees? Hours of home-made cd-making?

  • Speaker: Players to Pray For,

And yeah, with yas on the nervous feeling about playing France. They don't seem to be playing that well, which is suspicious in itself. It seems absurd for them to go down in Cardiff, with the final in Paris. Perhaps they'll be playing absurdiste rugby?

  • Speaker: Players to Pray For,

Kyle: if it's just his feet, I think they'd have been shy of the line- he was sliding towards the ball on the ground, arms out-stretched, feet following along- as I recall. The ball sat up rather oddly, too- unless that was just the way the vt operator was playing with it. The TMO made the decision quickly and decisively, and just possibly knows the rules better than most of us (including the motley Sky commentary crew- champions all!- but you excepted!)

  • Speaker: Players to Pray For,

Not to start a controversy, but I'm not sure about the carried back decision. I thought the ball just lingered short of the line. It was a funny moment, and I felt it was doubtful either way. When it's in doubt, I don't know which way the TMO should have gone on this occasion- possibly the other way.
But contgrats to Auckland too- they played with a lot of fire and deserved the win. It wasn't as if Canterbury played poorly- there was passion on both sides- but the Orcs were clearly superior.

  • Time: 100 Best TV Shows of All-Time,

Yeah, I could ditch at least half of those. He did pick up Singing Detective. But with you Mr Griffith; and also seriously missing at least the first series of Auf Weidersein Pet.
