It is equally pertinent to the issue of illegal downloading and copying. People want songs; some pay, some don't.
Yeah, I think I've got your opinion on that pretty much down by now, Paul, but I'm not sure how it's relevant to what I was saying: I'm just musing about the artificial/unwanted nature of the album format for most music consumers.

I might have bought a grand total of three versus hundreds of albums
Most people don't buy hundreds of albums, though. Most people have a very... intermittent... relationship with music. They aren't completists and they don't care about the album as a 'work'. Most people just want something on in the background to hum along with, or occasionally bop about drunkenly to. And given that most people just want the single they heard on the radio, Simon's point about what the consumer is doing right now with iTunes is, I think, a very pertinent one.
(I - obviously - have a really intense relationship with music, and thousands of albums on CD and LP. I appreciate the concept of the entire album as a discrete unit, but I'd say that even for me, as a big old nerd, only a small fraction of those are worth listening to as a 'piece'. Random mp3 play is the best thing that ever happened to me. :) )

Oh. I am now reminded: I actually saw Elvis Costello in the State in 2004. I must disagree with you there. It's a truly gorgeous theatre, but the mad 'orientalism' of the Civic has the State beaten in terms of sheer trippiness. Every single light in every chandelier in the Civic is held by a different tiny elephant! And the globe over the proscenium arch has a giant New Zealand on it and nothing else! And there are gold lions with flashing eyes! Plus the star-studded sky and the shooting stars and the moving clouds... no, I'm going to say the Civic is way more hallucinogenic.

Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance.
This list makes me think that humanity is incurably horrible and we are all doomed to endless evil and entropy. Jesus fuck.

That's when cinema started going widescreen and hypercoloured.
Exactly, though I hadn't really thought of it in those terms. What the hell, it's Friday. Here's something which addresses this very issue.
Bonus: Tony Randall!

But, as we worked out in a recent thread, not Real New Zealanders. You inhabit a strange limbo, Tiso.

Dave Dobbyn at the St James tomorrow
I saw him last night. When they say 'show starts at 8pm', they are not kidding! I think I missed about 20 minutes or so of his first set. I'm hoping it didn't include Songs From The Album That Three People Bought, Which I Consider Some of His Best Work (although I very much doubt he broke out 'Love Over All', my personal favourite).
