  • Hard News: What to Do?,

I think I'd be vaguely happy with the wording if the word 'good' was taken out of it. Talk about subjectivity overload.

I don't want to support the referendum makers, but I can imagine a posse of goofy people sitting around trying to create a question that distinguishes them from bad parents and the sort of discipline they might dish out - ie - a thrashing, a beating, a killing. And these 'good' parents only want to give Johnny a tap on the hand when he goes too close to the fire, the traffic, the witch in the cupboard at the bottom of the stairs etc. I am very tempted to spoil the ballot - the obvious answer to me is 'It's not.' (Wasn't that the point of giving the police discretionary powers?) But I really want them to lose - so I'll be voting 'yes'.

  • Hard News: Swine flu, terror and Susan Boyle,

and concluded with an amusing shouting match over the "Big Little City" ad campaign

After watching last week's Media 7 (which I greatly enjoyed) I have actually stayed in the room for the Big Little City ad and I wonder why anyone would come all this way for a little slice of France (which they may have trouble locating anyway - was it really filmed in Auckland?) It makes us seem locked forever in cultural cringe.

  • Hard News: Put on the full armour of God,

On April 7, Saddam Hussein struck a dictatorial pose, under this passage from the First Epistle of Peter: "It is God's will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men."

In this context it's easy to understand the (embarrassing) insensitivity of NZ customs officials when they see someone with a name and race that makes it clear that he is 'one of them'. What other guidelines do they have? They have been thoroughly advised that people like that are a) terrorists, b) cunning and c) desperate - so don't ignore the underwear. It does surprise me, however, that Customs doesn't hold some sort of list of people invited to NZ. It can't be that long, surely.

  • Hard News: That Buzzing Sound,

Motorway pirates however...now THAT would be interesting...

I'm attempting to listen to the interview on Morning Report on my hopeless Telecom rural broadband (dial up was faster) - and it seems that Melissa Lee's ideal motorway will lead straight to the prison - so you're all perfectly safe, as long as you don't take the motorway.

  • Hard News: Modern Lolz,

I went and saw Dylan moran on Saturday night. He is on the cutting edge of comedy, and a very funny man. I thought whilst fresh and funny he wasn't properly prepared for a New Zealand audience and several of his jokes - easily modified for local consumption if he had done his homework - fell flat. Which only goes to show even the very best can struggle to get it right for the full show.

I went on Sunday night. I think he might have done his homework by then. He was spot on.
