  • Michael Jackson: A Life?,

I do remember thinking it was grossly inappropriate to allow Jackson to visit Starship Children's Hospital when he played in Auckland c.1997

Indeed, is anyone else increasingly suspicious that David is in fact a mad scientist who somehow cloned himself, and this so-called "Bob-the-Baby" is actually "David 2.0"?

Worse still, I fear David 2.0's mother may be an entirely unsuspecting collaborator in all this malarkey...

Liked the bit about the Brethren, too.

  • Hard News: What to Do?,

I'm somewhat surprised by the lack of play given to Key's statement - which was relatively unambiguous for Key, and basically said he (and thus the government) is going to ignore the vote.

Although in explaining his own intention not to vote, he made a contradictory comment to the effect that it was time for politicians to listen to the people.

Imagine some alternative universe in which HC was still PM, and made the first comment:

"Arrogant Clark set to defy will of voters!"

    "Democracy under attack yet again!!"

And that would just be the Herald. Imagine Kiwibog.

  • Hard News: Chaos in Kingsland,

    I am clearly very suggestible.

When I first listened to the tape, having been prompted to hear "I shot the prick", that's exactly what I heard. Now, having read the comments here, I unmistakably hear "I cannot breathe."

I'm still practicing "maneuvering a car out of a skid".

Living in Canada, I've had the, ahem, the occasional opportunity to practice this over winter.

If anyone has any advances on: "take foot off accelerator, point wheel in direction you'd ideally be going, resist urge to slam on brakes really hard, hope for the best" ... well, I'm all ears.

    Get a car unstuck

Similarly difficult in my experience, unless you just happen to have the right equipment and - hopefully - a much larger vehicle handy. There's pretty much no skill required if both those criteria are fulfilled.

Does anyone else wonder why John makes such frequent (and frequently irrelevant) reference to his kids? Is it some kind of effort to distinguish himself from his predecessor?

I assume Phil Goff's kids have grown and flown the coop (I don't ever recall him talking much about them). Perhaps he could sire another for good measure, or introduce a "Cousin Oliver" for the cuteness factor?

My sense of Helen Clark at meetings and events was that she was constantly hard at work: light on the jokes and pleasantries, perhaps, but seriously interested in the people she was meeting, their work, the challenges they encountered, and what they hoped to achieve. Whereas Key is all jokes and pleasantries, and seemingly lacking in serious interest in anyone other than himself.

Would John Key be easier going around the BBQ over a few beers? Almost certainly. But that does not a Prime Minister make.

I don't want someone I can "relate to" running the place; I want someone who is competent.

It's Gore v Bush all over again...

  • Up Front: Are We There Yet?,

    Marriage Act 1955
    56(1)(b)
Alleges, expressly or by implication, that the issue of any lawful marriage is illegitimate or born out of true wedlock.

Obviously I'll have to be more careful who I call a right wing bastard, in future. Although it's only a $200 fine, so perhaps it's worth it?

On the idiotic question of whether same sex marriage infringes religious liberty -- this no-brainer went all the way to the Supreme Court in Canada. Given that religious institutions are not forced to marry anyone they don't want to marry, I trust the Court didn't spend more than 0.3 seconds dispatching that one.

But of course, the religious liberty claimed by the opponents of same-sex marriage has nothing to do with such hypothetical compulsion, and everything to do with: "I'm offended when society isn't organized according to my peculiar religious beliefs."
