  • Hard News: On Freedom,

Really, dysfunctional countries and ungoverned areas like Zimbabwe or Somalia should be at the top of propertarians' 'freedom' lists. You can do anything you like in those places, subject to a small retainer being paid to appropriate cops and warlords.

  • Southerly: E=mc^2... Your Views,

There is also this method for conducting high school science experiments:
    - work out from the theory you've just been taught what the ideal result should be
    - fiddle with apparatus
    - calculate randomly distributed numbers about the ideal curve
    - plot on a graph
    - draw a line through it
    - hand in, with a paraphrase of the instructions
    - and you're done.

  • Hard News: Cultures and violence, in reply to Yamis,

On the other hand this XXXX is probably quite nice, and I remember various other beers designated by various numbers of Xs on the cask.

The name dates back to the days when most people couldn't read. Some argue that Castlemaine XXXX is so called because Queenslanders/Australians still can't.

  • Hard News: Cultures and violence,

Quentin Tarantino's had to pull the release of his new film: http://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/film/8094915/Tarantino-premiere-cancelled

It's a good thing Peter Jackson had the foresight to omit the bit where all the hobbits rampage through the dwarf school with machine guns and flame throwers.

Maybe NZ should stop equipping our cops with their guns, then?

Dunno who else to buy from though. Kalashnikov? Used by the good side and the bad in many wars. Probably never spent a penny on advertising. Also, designed for illiterate peasant use, so even the dumbest cop should be able to avoid jamming or breaking one.

  • Hard News: Cultures and violence,

The Supreme Court usually applies particular heed to the hidden, zeroth amendment:
    "..except for black people..."

(to be inserted between each provision of the constitution).

  • Hard News: Cultures and violence,

America needs to contemplate not only gun control, but the cultural role that gun violence plays in its society.

But why? If you haven't got access to a gun, then however much you might be inclined to an armed rampage, you're not going to be able to actually do it.

The UK approach works - get caught with an unlicensed gun, and you're going to jail for five years or more. No arguments about "lawful purpose" or whatever considered. Limits illicit gun ownership to the kind of subcultures that want to shoot each other so much that they regard five years inside with equanimity.

I saw that. Can he actually do that? If a DEA or FBI agent decides to go round busting Coloradans, can the President direct them to desist?

  • Hard News: You down with TPP?, in reply to Rich of Observationz,

Or instead of commodities like powdered milk, we could sell premium items like cheese and yoghurt, where the quality or lack of is self evident.

(We could start by having reasonably priced premium cheese in our home market).

  • Hard News: You down with TPP?, in reply to Bruce Hitcchcock,

Wouldn't it be better, rather than trying to sue people for ripping off brands or whatever, for China to have better regulation of food quality? Then we'd be able to compete as a provider of quality product rather than the only people allowed to draw an anchor on the packet.
