  • Hard News: Mo' Indexing,

They deliberately oversampled Maori and Pacific populations in the Te Rau Hinengaro survey, which makes the overall sample large. In contrast with the social focus of the NZDep Atlas, the survey is very much framed in clinical terms. You can find it here:

  • Legal Beagle: Tastes like democracy,

Matthew, I agree we need a big investment in understanding about civics alongside introduction of technology that (as others have noted) makes voting just too easy to stay valuable for most.

  • Legal Beagle: Tastes like democracy,

I'm not denying the technical challenges or that our current voting system works well for many people.

As our population ages, we can expect more disabled voters for whom getting to a physical polling place and reading a ballot in tiny print are a significant - and blatantly unfair - barrier to their democratic rights and obligations. Stroppy baby boomers are not going to meekly take that lying down.

Add younger voters being used to very low transaction costs (time, effort, access) in any activity.

Resistance to online voting does not seem like a viable long-term proposition - for political, not technical reasons.

  • Island Life: Hunting Squirrels,

if 200 metres was too far, she might be advised to call the venue and make arrangements in future.

Russell, being unable to walk unaided for 200m is exactly the critieria for getting a mobility parking permit.

I think this was only picked up as a story because of publicity last week about the minor increase in the fine for stealing mobility parks.

I agree it reflects a lack of judgement by the DPS/police about the risk posed by an octogenarian or two.

  • Hard News: Medical Matters,

Let's not buy into the line being peddled here for a second longer. Given the blatantly deficient argument interspersed through almost 600 posts I'm now far more curious about the deficient person that lies behind it.

Here's what I've noticed so far. Profoundly and wilfully ignorant. Seems fearful of the wild unpredictability of the universe and seeks a sense of control by imposing black or white views and ignoring inconvenient evidence. Unable to genuinely engage in conversation or community. Sad wee man who will probably try to shrug this off as "weird" without drawing a single breath.

  • Hard News: Medical Matters,

Grant, it wasn’t your fault. You don’t have to take it out on other people though. I know you’re scared but listening to what these people say doesn’t have to threaten who you think you are now. Call your mom - she’d like that.
