  • Hard News: Spring Timing,

Labour and Green are not natural or even comfortable bedfellows.
If one looks across the Tasman to Tasmania the smouldering wreck of Lara Giddings Labor/Green administration is about to be replaced by the true, blue of Will Hodgman's Liberals. Tasmania has a similar electoral system (Hare/Clark) to our MMP. Tasmania voted the first ever Green MP into an Australasian Parliament and also the first Green Senator into the Australian Federal upper house. Premier Giddings is the latest Labor casualty of an unworkable alliance with the Greens. Several Tasmanian coalitions have ended in disaster as Labor and Green squabble over policies and the baubles of office. Lara Giddings actually made the point by sacking all her Green ministerial colleagues when she called the election. She belatedly ditched them in a futile attempt to present Labor as a realistic voting option. Sadly, Labor in Tasmania is doomed and tainted by its association with the Green Party.

Michelle Hacker... a very helpful news video researcher. She was running NVR when last I darkened the threshold of the Starship Enterprise.

  • Hard News: Unscripted Drama,

Cricket was never the same after Kerry Packer hi-jacked the game. Gentlemen in white flannel were replaced by mercenaries in pajamas. The almighty dollar rules and everyone without a financial stake is disadvantaged. So TV, Indian bookies, greedy and self-serving ICC nabobs, and match-fixers run free. Families and kids who might like a daylong experience in the ground have been priced out of the action. NZ will soon be priced out of the game too.

  • Hard News: Karen, and being kind,

That is a lovely and loving tribute to your sister. I lost my "big" brother 10 years ago on Boxing Day... I miss him every day but good memories abound and the great sadness I believe is how he has missed seeing his four daughters grow into strong, confident and talented women, each following a different path. You too will miss your sister each day but burnished memories will still gleam in your heart. Take special care of your Mum this Christmas.

  • Hard News: We need to talk about Len,

"About a dozen, older folk" at first I thought them friends of Madame Defarge... but it turns out they were simply protesting the lack of room up-grades and other freebies which are so liberally doled out to politicians and some media wankers... er, personalities, in return for favourable treatment.

As one former Australian PM famously remarked, "There's no such thing as a free lunch."

  • Hard News: We're back!, in reply to Geoff Lealand,

No problems there Geoff. We are all looking forward to being back in harness and rearing to go in an election year where the media will be playing their part in the democratic process. .

  • Hard News: Mandela,

When Nelson Mandela visited NZ in 1995 he attended a reception and dinner in Wellington Town Hall. Mr. Mandela had invited journalists from the various NZ media to attend s a tribute from him to the scribes who had reported his plight as a political prisoner, the anti-Apartheid protests and later the story of his release and the end of the evil and racist regime in South Africa.
.It was a wonderful evening and one which my wife and I shall . ..never forget. Mandela was truly one of the greatest, most humble but inspirational human beings to have walked this Earth. We are all the poorer for his passing
