Positivism has nowt to do wi' it :)
I prefer my journalists intelligent and with a smidgen of integrity, and my news informative and balanced. She's a hard road finding it in this country.

*Rawdon ... Speaking of typos.

Rawdin Christie deserved a dressing down, not to mention a decent haircut. Can't stand the man.

Tantrums and meltdowns aside, I think that unfortunately Mr Whyte's ignorant point of view about so-called Maori privilege is shared by many Pakeha New Zealanders, and plenty of them may live in Epsom.
So yes, with that alongside Key's endorsement, I think Epsom will "suck it up" and vote Act, regrettably.
Whyte's rant is nothing new. It reflects the dearly held Protestant notions of the meritocracy - if you work hard you'll do well, and if you're not doing well you must be doing something wrong.
On a brighter note - Labour's up in the polls!

I've joined this conversation late but felt compelled to join it ...
Thank you Danielle, Jackie and Emma for speaking my thoughts, it's such a privilege to know there are women who fully, fully understand and are able to speak.
It's also a great privilege to have anything to do with men who are able to engage with this conversation. It's courageous and worthwhile and I appreciate it. Just don't be surprised if they screw up a bit along the way. They've been swimming in rape culture since they were born, same as us.
Thank you Katrina. In the absence of a national dialogue about this, you are contributing to starting one as far as I'm concerned.

Beautiful! Executed as intended :)
My house is the opposite to Emma's - my husband is the cook. Not that I can't, more that I don't.
If I'm by myself (seldom) I tend to go for something easy like omelette, or something out of the freezer like pumpkin soup or vege curry. So not much inspiration here I'm afraid !

Hard News: The perilous birth of the…, in reply to
i'm pretty sure that smoking anything isn't that great for humans :)
that said, humans have been smoking and ingesting psychoactive substances for probably thousands of years, and it will continue apace, methinks.
i applaud Peter Dunne for what he's done with this legislation. I don't applaud him for much else, although I have an impression of him as having some level of integrity (maybe he can afford it, being a bit player).
anecdotally, we (at treatment services) are getting increased numbers of referrals for people (particularly younger people i think, it's about accessibility, although as Russell has so rightly pointed out accessibility to synthetics is / should be at an all time low!) where their chief concern is their use of synthetics, and the doctors we work with, who tend to be a reasonably rational lot, are starting to do research on what this stuff actually does to people. yes it binds to cannabinoid receptors, but it seems to actually cause more problems more quickly for more people than cannabis. there have been questions about whether or not manufacturers are including stimulants in the products, because of the number of presentations to ED where people are highly anxious, irritable, etc similar to stimulant presentations.
further to the accessibility factor - i'm pretty sure (just an opinion) that retailers / manufacturers would not have hesitated to have sold large volumes to dealers at cut rate prices prior to the deadline last year. so I'm also sure that people can still buy various amounts of synthetics from various dealers too (although that supply might be running pretty low now). same as when BZP went the way of the dodo, i had clients for about a year saying they could buy it from dealers.
anyway. it is all pretty interesting, and I can't wait to see the medium term effect it has on cannabis classification. I think something will change re that, in time.

Very impressed Ben! Talk about motivated :)
Jackie we should hook up. I'm swimming in homemade sauces relishes etc. you are friends with Danielle right? Me too :) although largely on Facebook it must be said.
Righto here's the jam recipe.
CHILLI TOMATO JAM
Makes 4+ pints (about two litres)
Ingredients:
5 lb / 2.25kg heirloom tomatoes, roughly chopped - any tomatoes will do
2 small yellow onions, diced
1 cup dark brown sugar
1 cup white sugar
Juice of 2 lemons
1 green apple, finely diced (I use whatever apple I’ve got in the fridge).
2 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon coriander
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
2 teaspoon red chili flakes
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional – I left it out cause the Hubster doesn’t like it)
3/4 teaspoon cumin
1/3 cup apple cider vinegar (any will do – I used red wine vinegar)
Method:
Place allingredients in a large pot or Dutch oven and stir to combine. Over medium heart, bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce heat and allow mixture to simmer, uncovered, for 2-3 hours, or until the jam is really dark and thick. Stir occasionally.
Recipe doesn’t call for it but I transferred to a blender and gave it a good blitz. This means that you don’t have to bother getting the skins off the tomatoes before you start, and you end up with a lovely smooth jam.
Transfer jam to clean, sterilized jars. If canning, boil jars in a hot-water bath for 20minutes. If storing in the refrigerator, the jam will keep for 2 weeks (or more).
NB this is keeping in the cupboard for months in sterilized jars. My mother eats it with a spoon because she likes it so much :)

Me. I've been a hard news / public address fan for years. I just so appreciate some decent comment on politics / economics / social issues. Not to mention music, photography and food (I think it's the Feed blog that's tipped me over).
My first online subscription!!! Thanks Russell and to your co-bloggers too.
