There are rules around broadcast media during the campaign period and they're being applied
Basically, Radio Live and Newstalk ZB are allowed to run 24/7 right-wingery, so long as they don't actually use the words "Vote National". Fox News is allowed to broadcast "fair and balanced" content on Sky Channel 88 - I guess they won't use the words "New Zealand" from one week to the next.
But play a song critical of our beloved leader, and they're after your licence.
I'm seriously thinking about hiding an FM transmitter with a car battery in a building or park somewhere, tuning it to a free guardband frequency and broadcasting the John Key song on an endless loop until the electoral commission track it down.

But by my reading of the Electoral Act, it shouldn't be "banned" anyway. All it should require is that when the song's finished the DJ should say "And that was Darren Jones PO Box 555 Auckland, with his new song 'Planet Key'", and that would satisfy the requirements of the Act, wouldn't it? He's presumably not paying the stations to play the music, so he's not incurring advertising expenses over $12,500, and he's an individual, so he doesn't have to be registered. What am I missing?

It's the Broadcasting Act. Don't make me cite the section ...
All it should require is that when the song’s finished the DJ should say “And that was Darren Jones PO Box 555 Auckland, with his new song ‘Planet Key’”, and that would satisfy the requirements of the Act, wouldn’t it?
That will be the case if the EC decides it's an electoral advertisement in its online stance. Then the dude would have to display an address.

Don't let anyone stop you from doing so. Doing it on the move would not be a bad idea either.

The best we can do in the circumstances is to starve the infotainment beast, one boycott at a time.

I think objectively it would be plain impossible to describe Newstalk ZB's daytime output as left-wing. The line varies a little more at Radio Live.

I watched the show last night Russell, and wasn´t all that impressed with Sean´s question to you: Don´t they have the right to feel the way they do? (ie be offended by the supposed Hitler Youth rally) This is a pernicious and slippery argument. If someone tells a lie, and a second person becomes righteously indignant because they believe that lie, it´s still a lie. Do we have a right to be mistaken or misled? I suppose we do, but that´s not the point. What Sean seemed to be doing was a bit of sleight of hand, where something bogus (eg the KDC paid for all the booze claim) was transformed into something valid (the honest reactions to what was presented to Sean´s trusting listeners). Not an argument I would be particularly proud of making.

yes he said that when Slater was obnoxious about that kid who'd died on the West Coast, calling him "feral", someone DDOS''d whaileoil in retaliation, taking a copy of ALL their email in the process ..... some time later it was dumped in Nicky's lap and he's done the research and written a book .... seems people on the 9th floor of the Beehive have been hacking into Labour's computers and sharing the results with Slater (and vice-versa) .....

What the success of “Last Week Tonight” suggests, on a deeper level, is that American television viewers may finally be tired of the frantic bombast generated by the Stimulation Media.
What’s more, after years of making do with the therapeutic jibes of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, they are finding in Oliver a figure more interested in making sense of the world than in making them laugh.
