  • Hard News: Bringing an order Auckland…,

The use of 'Centre Right' is interesting. In today's newspeak this tends to mean rabidly neoliberal.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: A night out dancing,

I've had the same experience as your son. Apple Music is working seamlessly for me across Mac, iPhone and iPad. I do have an iTunes Match subscription.

I'm really enjoying the 'For You' section with it's curated playlists and music selections. I like the service so much that I have unsubscribed from Spotify and TIDAL.

Now Apple just need to offer the option of higher resolution streaming, and I'll be very happy.

  • Hard News: Mediaworks: The only horizon…, in reply to Steve Barnes,

I meant compared to other formats/genres. If Netflix were to get involved in local production, as they have in other territories, this might be a good place to start.

A simple interview show can't be prohibitively expensive to produce. It's about time the likes of Netflix NZ dipped their toes into the current affairs waters. After all, it's the future of TV consumption.

Completely anecdotal I know, but I strongly suspect the fact that the 18-39, 18-49 and 25-54 numbers are well down this year, has a lot to do with the new streaming options. TV 1 and shows that depend on 5+ are still doing well, but when you break the demos down, these are overwhelmingly made up of people over 54 - i.e. people more likely to be late adopters of new technology.

The end of the Free to Air broadcast model seems to be accelerating.

  • Hard News: About Campbell Live,

The Clark Govt had some sound ideas for public broadcasting. Unfortunately they were ultimately let down by cold feet – quite possibly due to the 1st term “winter of discontent” – and what I also suspect was a half-baked attempt to emulate the UK Channel 4 model.

Also the Labour model of Charter plus the requirement that TVNZ deliver a dividend each year was a hopelessly contradictory state-of-affairs.

  • Hard News: About Campbell Live, in reply to st ephen,

Yes, a big chunk of the 5+ ratings are made up of older people - over 54 - who are considered irrelevant by networks and ad agencies, and who tend to be very conservative in their viewing patterns. Hence the dominance of TV1 in the 5+ ratings.

Look at the key target demographics of 18-49, 25-54 and HHS with kids 0-14, and you'll see a completely different pattern. This is why 5+ ratings are disregarded by networks as well as producers (though they're frequently used by news media as they are simplistic and easy for readers/viewers to digest).

  • Hard News: About Campbell Live, in reply to Hilary Stace,

"Although there seem to be good grounds for challenging the way they measure and evaluate ratings. Particularly that they discount the large proportion of the population over 55."

To be fair, this isn't a problem with the ratings system - more an issue with the advertising industry. Broadcast television's core business is delivering audiences to advertisers. Each Network has a specific target audience they are trying to attract in order to generate revenue. The more people from that demographic who watch, the more the network can charge for a 30 second advertising slot. For example, TV2's target audience is All People 18-49. TV3's is All People 25-54.

Everyone outside the target audience (teenagers and people over 54 in TV3's case) are of no interest to advertisers, and therefore of no commercial interest to TV networks. This isn't a fault of the ratings system. It's the fault of an advertising industry that determines that only a particular segment of the population are worth marketing to via TV advertising.

"Perhaps the key word there is *funded* TV 3 news & CL are probably unfunded."

    As is Shortland Street.

  • Capture: Laneway 2015,

    Attachment

Here’s one from the middle of the crowd at the hottest part of the day: watching Courtney Barnett, who was excellent. Highlight for me: St Vincent, with Belle and Sebastian as shambolic runners-up. I’ve been to all five Laneways and do think the festival is a great thing for Auckland, and very well run.

  • Speaker: UPDATE: Jimmy's best films of…,

Excellent reviews Jimmy, thanks. I also loved Boxtrolls (as did my 8 year old boy). We have the Blu-ray, and I predict years of happy rewatching. Haven’t seen Birman yet, but am looking forward to it a lot. One movie you didn’t mention was Boyhood. I loved the audacity of this and the real raging of the characters. Made me cry and has haunted me since I saw it.

I look forward to your next lot of reviews.
