  • Katharine Moody, in reply to Alfie,

Of course they would. And it’s little surprise that Key would like to see Campbell nobbled. Just think how many ministers have been made to look like fools during CL appearances. For a start Hekia Parata couldn’t handle a serious interview, then Simon Bridges came across as a first class dork with an attitude problem.

And then they (the Executive) just refused all requests for interviews. Cowards.

    Somewhat off topic, but worth re-reading this Chalkie article in light of the Govt's pre-budget announcement today about boosting R&D funding to the private sector;

When I first read that article, the word "feudalism" immediately sprang to mind. No other term - not even the word 'hypocrisy' - can more strongly describe major companies that go out of their way to evade tax while also asking for taxpayer largesse at the same time.

Chevron did have an oil tanker named Condoleezza Rice…

Leaving a wave of controversy in its wake, one of the most visible reminders of the Bush administration’s ties to big oil – the 129,000-ton Chevron tanker Condoleezza Rice – has quietly been renamed, Chevron officials acknowledged yesterday.
“We made the change to eliminate the unnecessary attention caused by the vessel’s original name,” said Chevron spokesman Fred Gorell.

They renamed her the Altair Voyager - shows they have a sense of humour - Altair in astrology is an ill-omened star and portends danger from reptiles...
it is also derived from an arabic phrase for flying eagle and is probably Babylonian.

That is good. And I have been watching Campbell Live after all this kerfuffle. After the disappointment of the first programme that had fluffy duck stories, I've enjoyed the following two and will go onto watch as a patriotic duty! I loved what Fran O'Sullivan said last night on the Daily Blog live-streaming event: Campbell live has "moments of brilliance".

    I just wish I had a peoplemeter.

Last night's lead on Campbell Live: Burger King has joined the companies who have scrapped zero hour contracts.

This Campbell campaign has changed a pretty big chunk of the employment landscape. Amazing.

if anything it has now become open season on their menfolk by Law Enforcers.

No, that isn't quite right. What has happened is that now white police officers killing unarmed black men is actually news. Previously it occurred just as regularly but it wasn't news.

I clicked through to the ratings on Throng from a couple of nights ago.

Both 3 News and Campbell Live seem to rate well for TV3 on the +1 channel, whereas OneNews doesn't rate a mention (despite higher popularity overall and lower popular competition from other programmes), which seems a little weird to me.

Is there some known reason for this? Are people switching from 1 to 3+1 after OneNews? Are people who get home later preferring 3 for some reason? Or am I misinterpreting the ratings?

There's no mystery here. A large proportion of the population never leave TV One. They watch One News because they've always watched One News. They watch whatever is on after One News because it's on the same channel. They don't switch to watch the Cricket World Cup Semifinal because that's on Prime, which would require pushing a button on the remote that isn't "1" and they haven't done that before and what if they couldn't get it back on "1" again? They're certainly not going to go searching for "One + 1" even if they knew it existed. If they miss the news on One, they've missed the news fullstop.

  • Simon Bennett, in reply to st ephen,

Yes, a big chunk of the 5+ ratings are made up of older people - over 54 - who are considered irrelevant by networks and ad agencies, and who tend to be very conservative in their viewing patterns. Hence the dominance of TV1 in the 5+ ratings.

Look at the key target demographics of 18-49, 25-54 and HHS with kids 0-14, and you'll see a completely different pattern. This is why 5+ ratings are disregarded by networks as well as producers (though they're frequently used by news media as they are simplistic and easy for readers/viewers to digest).

  • Damian Christie, in reply to Bart Janssen,

Logic might suggest that if they wasted less time and money on live crosses they could deliver more news.

A couple of years ago I would've agreed with you, but I think we've actually pulled back from Peak Live Cross, which was when we started to see the 'Brady Bunch' of reporters stacked in the corner of the screen all waiting to be crossed to on one topic.

Last night for instance, on One News, I can see there was ONE live cross - to Corrin Dann talking about the budget - I'd argue that these are the sort of live crosses we want to keep, where ideally (*ideally*) we get some analysis around the story.

In terms of news, there was 22 minutes. No animal stories, but one track at the bottom of the bulletin on the Kardashians, so take out 1'30" for that. The first story was also about the big dump of snow down South, but I'll save that fight for another day :)

22 mins = a commercial half hour. The rest is taken up with sports, weather, re-caps, promos, intros all that sort of stuff.

I'm not saying that's AMAZING, WORLD BEATING etc, but just adding some actual numbers to the mix.

I'm not sure that 3 News is particularly different from One in terms of that breakdown, I'd be surprised if it was markedly so.

I’d say yes, at least in the 5+ category (i.e. including 70 year olds) that Throng uses for ratings, far more One News watchers are home at 6pm than 3 News watchers.

To answer your earlier question regarding ratings, they are tracked minute-by-minute, but usually published in the quarter hours, so yes, if someone watches the first bit of the news then leaves, people know. In fact, there’s not that much drift, and often the 6.30pm story is the most watched. I’ve attached a snapshot of Monday’s ratings (25-54) so you can see how it works. The numbers are % of the available audience.

In any event, I'm sure monitoring technology has moved on from that system nowadays.

Well, I did mention the GCSB earlier and yes monitoring tech has moved on. That doesn't mean Neilson will be using anything of the sort, they supply the figures their paymasters want.

Thanks for the numbers. I think TV3 has been doing more egregious live crosses than that most nights. Excluding the advertorial ASB financial advisor live cross which I'm guessing ASB pay handsomely for in the first place.

I agree when you jump to a specific reporter with expertise in a subject that seems reasonable.

I learned in Texas that weather is news. I always suspected that one reason was hardly anyone could complain about weather as news.
