  • OnPoint: What gorilla?,

So this talk about expensive, or affordable (depending on your point of view), prisons, shipping containers and what not .... Isn't that just the noise the machine makes when it's warming up, just before the privatisation?
It is a rather lucrative business sector, after all. one of the few sectors that continue to experience growth ...

  • Speaker: A Very Simple Stroke,

An amazing story, exquisitely told and inspirational - in every respect.
David, I take my hat off to you!

  • Hard News: F**kin' Choice,

I was waiting for the new OF season with bated breath.
Loved the trailers too btw. The still that isn't actually a still ... what an exquisite tease that was.

    Gotta love outrageously fortunate Tuesdays.

  • Island Life: Burn fat, not oil,

NZTA did what they could to discredit the protesters by directing the crowds onto the centre lanes, completely blocking the bridge. Sure made us look like a bunch of arrogant plonkers...

As we approached the bridge, my friend spoke with Wayne McDonald and was told that they couldn’t allow protesters onto the clip-ons for safety reasons. When asked what the safety reasons were, McD said we’d rock the bridge, people would get motion sickness, fall over and get trampled.

(Curiously this doesn't seem to be an issue for the Auckland Marathon.)

  • Hard News: Current affairs TV in "making…,

On the issue of celebrity endorsements:

Mike King must have had ‘some’ knowledge about pig farming practices. I think he simply chose not to delve into it because it wasn't convenient.
He’s neither stupid nor poorly informed, and unless he was living under a rock he must have come across a SAFE campaign, or one of the many TV programmes, or the odd petition; besides he would have been an obvious target for animal rights activists.

His emotional response when he visited the farm seemed genuine alright, but the horror on his face also showed a great deal of guilt. Guilt over electing to ignore what should have been obvious; guilt for failing to act and for “looking only the money side of things” I think was how he put it.

I’d like to think that celebrities share a duty of care in such instances.
And frankly, exposing your former employer in the way that Mike King has done doesn’t go down well either. It strikes me as too convenient.
(As an aside, I wonder if future endorsement contracts will include a gag clause?)

I’m pleased about the increased public awareness of intensive farming practices but I also hope that this issue makes celebrities more careful about the role they play when they endorse a product.

  • Random Play: The Last of the Long…,

Ooooh, long lunches. Weren't they just the best part of working hard?!! I remember them fondly and recall quite a few memorable ones at Prego ...
I think the fun somehow went out of it all when we became bridled with electronic leashes. One by one, people would turn up with cellphones (or PDAs or whatever) and these devices became virtual, if uninvited, lunchtime companions. Of course, they completely changed the dynamic because lunch partners suddenly became oh-so-accessible and pseudo efficient which didn’t go well with the basic premise of the long lunch.
    It’s a shame really.

  • Hard News: Have you met thingy?,

This name thing resonates with quite a few people, huh?!
I’m normally pretty good with remembering names. Even if I meet acquaintances after years, I can usually address them by their name. I say “usually” and “normally” because sometimes - quite rarely actually - I draw a blank for no apparent reason whatsoever. But my specialty is that I reserve this disorder for really important occasions, with the most important (and best known) people, typically in a social setting when I introduce them to other very important and well-known people …
I’ve done it to the chairman of a big company (just a few months after I joined), and was mortified when I heard the wrong name come out of my mouth. Luckily he was gracious about it, but boy, it still makes me cringe.

  • Hard News: Truck Off, etc,

I'll admit that I took the Telecom ad for face value. Obviously staged but a bona fide corporate Telecom client. In fact, I was sure I'd heard of the company - how's that for embarrassing!!! And yes, they were accountants. :p

Rather disappointed. I would have taken Saatchis for smarter than that. I fail to see how that sort of stunt (that leaves people feeling stupid/embarrassed) can be positive for the Telecom brand?

Would have enjoyed being there in person as I had planned, but life sometimes has a way of changing one's plans.
