  • Field Theory: Professionalism is killing…,

“I don't know when Walsh started watching sport but it must have been a wondrous time, possibly before the invention of television and radio.”

It must have predated the 16 December 1905 All Blacks vs Wales match in Cardiff - where Bob Deans was robbed of his try in the late stages of the game by a cheating Welshman who pulled him back from the try line, and an unfit Scots referee who was 30 yards behind the game when Deans scored, and in no position to judge.

Deans went to his deathbed firm in his stance that he, and New Zealand, was robbed on that day.

So, if he was roughly 13 at the time, David Walsh would need to be 117 or there-abouts.

I certainly understand where you're coming from too Craig.

"...make James Joyce look like Hemmingway"

    Great line.

"Paint me ignorant, but what is the point of defacing the ballot?
It doesn't get counted and just adds to the cost of the operation, so why?"

I have to agree with this. I know the question "Should a smack as part of good parental correction be a criminal offence in New Zealand?" doesn’t make sense because at the moment as it isn’t illegal to smack as a part of good parental correction - so why ask the question? However, I believe if I don’t vote yes, I will be giving more power to those who opposed the law, for whatever reason the cling to, to claim they are the majority.

I understand that the stupidity of the question is enough to enrage any sensible person, but the law is presently working as designed, I want to actively support it. I will vote for it with a yes.

"When you're done, go watch an episode of CSI where magic swabs in surrealistically well-resourced labs convict killers by the end of an hour of commercial television."

One of my pet peeves with forensic programmes too, the Super CSI Lab (where looking for clues is best done in the dark by attractive people with torches).

My other one is the pet 'Computer Techie', who can apparently research anything on-line at just the right time for the plotline. Even if the information researched is a 40 year old newspaper clipping about a minor fire that someone, for no reason what-so-ever, digitised. Or, of course, the secret government files on the Rosicrucians and their monastic assassians...

All of which is freely available on the web, apparently.

"Just thinking, you make a good point. Perhaps it is just Key's misfortune to follow someone as awesome as Helen Clark, and the public has to high an expectation after her reign. Or not."

I'm going with 'or not' Tom. You don't have to compare to Clark. Compare Key to Bolger and Key looks bad. Jim Bolger would never have feed the Worth story for the media the way Key did. Perhaps Key was taking a calculated risk with factors I don't know about, but I'm not convinced they could be worth this much scandal.

When Labour went with Goff, they went with matching political experience against a fast riser who hadn't picked up a reputation as a 'politician'. National was banking that Key could bring to the role qualities that would make up for a lack of experience with bad polls, bad press, and handling hard challenges within the caucus. It will be interesting to see which approach will work over the next 24-28 months.

Great post David, spot on. Why aren't other commentators bringing up the same issues?

<I've known Nevil for years, and I like him personally, but his public commentary lately has verged on the batshit.>

I think you are being too kind there Russell, unless you are talking about his comments verging on the other side of the line of batshit.

I'd personally judge the 'misjudged' comments I have caught out of him of late as being armpit deep in a Wishartian level of batshit.

    "Is 'Aw, thanks, that's sweet'

Related to 'What I learned from this was to hone my sarcasm to such a razor-sharp edge it was barely noticeable.'

    By any chance?"

I was going with a solid 'Yip' on that one Andrew. Still it's nice to be replied to...

  • Up Front: The Ex Files,

“On an unrelated note, if you are going to have sex with your ten wives and husbands, we'll set up a pay site. Streaming video. Web 2.0! I'll take a cut. Call me, we'll put together a deal.”

Count me out John. Based on my limited (and utterly clothed) contact with individuals who actually group together to do that sort of thing, I’d pay money not to watch. Not that I am presuming that Emma looks repellent naked (or even speculating on the topic), but nine of the other ten spouses could be guaranteed to.

“It boggles me how these people hold jobs. I mean, my ex-boss was running her own business, but she also had a real-life middle-management job where she had to deal with real people face to face, and we were seriously considering that she might be an actual sociopath. Yet once you get on to this subject, these mad bosses don't seem that uncommon.”

I once had a boss who had is position because he could wear a suit and convince a bank to lend him money. Once he owed the bank the money, well they were stuck with him, and so was I. Your former boss puts him in the shade though Emma.

<Sounds cool. If they do make a movie with Green Arrow in it... I plump for The Dark Knight Returns. Pity Clint Eastwood's too old to play Batman in it now though.>

Yeah, its a great story, and it would translate well to screen, but I've grown found of Green Arrow recently based on his volatile head-strong nature, his desire to build relationships with the people in his life, the fact that he is sexually active, and doesn't sit around in Bat Cave brooding.

The Arrow's Batman impressions are just the icing on the cake.

Green Arrow (impersonating Batman): I was not surprised. for I always expect, the unexpected! (pretends to swirl the cape)
Hawkman: Ha ha ha! Do the cape again...

Also, Batman has his own movies. I think a good Green Arrow movie could be based on "Identity Crisis" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Identity_Crisis_(2004_DC_miniseries)

"I also ran into costume designer Ngila Dickson, who is -- be ready to swoon, geeks -- working on the Green Lantern movie."

Never mind Green Lantern - when is the Green Arrow getting a movie?

That I'd be keen on, so long as they stear away from the origin story.
