Capture: Spring is Like a Perhaps Hand, in reply to
This is of the Brom Family that I do not know the species and neither does my friend who is growing it.
Hi Sofie, I'm fairly sure the Wellington Botanic Garden has one of those growing in its Begonia House (found some evidence here and here). I have emailed them in the past to ask for a plant ID (when I wanted to know the Latin name of japonica) and they were very helpful. Contact details are on the council's website and the gardens even have a Facebook page these days.

So many lovely birds! I voted right at the start of Bird Of The Year and nearly forgot which one I chose, had to look up the email to make sure... I picked the fairy tern as I figured with so few of them left they could do with the publicity.
I've never actually seen a fairy tern as far as I know, so instead here's a kaka from Wellington's Botanic Garden a couple of weeks ago (my best bird shot since this one in the Spring thread).

That is such a pretty beetle I had to look it up. It looks like the "Fungus-Eating Ladybird" which is apparently from Australia and likes to eat powdery mildew in vege gardens.
Which New Zealand Insect? = awesome.

a purple and white display every year
That purple is gorgeous, I find it hard to get the velvety look of the petals in photos but that one shows it nicely.
Also – big Tui envy there!!! Amazed at how you all get so close
It's taken me years and many many bad photos of tui to get to these ones. The purchase of a point & shoot camera with an 18x optical zoom helped, I don't have to get quite so close now...

Spring at Fort Takapuna
Nora, do you know what those white flowers are called? I think they're the same as some that grow in the spring wildflower garden at the Botanic Gardens here. We had a lovely dark red one as our desktop picture for a while but I don't know what they are.
