Oh crap. Can someone monitor my intake of Epic Pale Ale prior to speaking please? That stuff is my kryptonite.
Did I say "conscious party"? I think that's because it was the year that the booze ran out... This year, may it be flowing like water...

Snore... Denis Welch on Nine to Noon today suggested that the Listener's cover story glorifies Witi Ihimaera and his apology. What, so if it's buried instead in a small paragraph on page 96 it's more of a punishment than a front page?
Mind you, still waiting for the university to explain its rapid investigation/conclusion! But the waiting may be in vain - my experience with their media machine when producing Frontseat was fairly typical: happy to present when it's good news, happy to simply not answer phones when it's not (but quick to follow up with tasty letters about lawyers etc etc).
Anyway... speaking of historical fiction that knowingly, playfully toys with other literature, I'd like to recommend Rachael King's brand new novel Magpie Hall for a spunky insight into Lyttelton, tattoos and taxidermy at the turn of the last century.

I'd like to publicly thank David Slack for the Laphroig. And the hangover.

Pauline, I'm just so happy that you love New Artland! It was a big job and we're really, really proud of it, and it's blimmin' nice to know that it's being watched by such lovely people. Thanks!

Wow, while our brother was meeting his future wife via the pages of Misty, Jolisa and I were unwittingly being exposed to floppy-haired future film stars, such as Julian Sands and Hugh Grant.
I say forget about newspapers, bring back photo love stories!

BTW, the morning battle between customers for a copy of the DomPost at Deluxe Cafe is a ritual I treasure. Also, the cafe staff cut out the daily horoscope and tape it to the counter, inspiring much mocking and mirth...
The subtle differences between city papers offer an insight into each town's culture, I reckon... For example, the village-like aspect of Wellington is apparent in the DomPost still printing a weekly list of the names (surnames in BOLD CAPITALS) of those who've been convicted of drunk-driving. The newspaper equivalent of throwing rotten fruit at villagers in stocks in the town square?

Hey there... Me and Ben had to do the paper round too, you know! And, readers, Jolisa says her paper round money was spent on 'comics'. To be more specific, it was a precious weekly subscription to Girl magazine, air-freighted from England with a fresh photo love story every week, alongside full-colour posters of such 80s heart-throbs as, erm, Shakin' Stevens...

Rugby rugby rugby... Dark Knight Dark Knight Dark Knight... come on people! Let's talk about the Jaquie Brown diaries (and, maybe spell her name right...).
That's some Friday night fun right there. A slow start's a good start, I reckon. My favourite moment: Jaquie in momentarily revealing thought-bubble-voiceover, "Get angry, bitch", as Sarita Singh lamely hands over her Bizzy Trickle scrapbook.
