Hi Nora, yes, they remind me of crystallized food too! That and jewellery! Amazing that it's all 'just' water!

I’ve posted this and a selection of companions photos in my blog article:
    Wintry walks and icy spectacles
Note the sand underfoot. The ice was from a lagoon which has formed where a creek drains onto the beach.

Hi Sofie and Lilith, yes, very chilly. During that cold snap the ice lasted several days. Here is the local lagoon. That near-perfectly smooth and reflective blue is actually sheet ice! Sofie, those are lovely manuka trees, or are they kanuka?

Hello everyone! There are some wonderful images in this thread! Here in Otago we’ve had heavy frosts lately. In the dunes next to the beach moisture from sea spray combined with freezing conditions have created some amazing hoar frost as can be seen on these dead fern leaves:

  • Up Front: Something Chronic,

I must say I'm finding the repeated touting of positive thinking in the above thread nauseating. I used to be into it to - before I developed CFS. I still wish it were true but it isn't. You may be able to change your attitude to your illness but you cannot think it away. Those who seem to be able to do so may be fortunate in achieving spontaneous remission. I've written quite strongly about this in my own article http://rushleigh---the-wasteland-chronicle.blogspot.com/2010/04/positive-thinking-pitfalls-and-medical.html. When I had finished drafting that article I went looking for a medical research project I remembered seeing. I didn't find it but I did find an excellent article by oncology doctor Jimmie Holland whose conclusions mirrored my own. You'll find the link to it in my article. The modern myth that through positive thinking we can change our bodies as well as our minds has very damaging effects on those who do not recover. She noted that some long term cancer survivors were confirmed pessimists, others optimists. She says, and I agree, that we each has to cope in whatever way works best for us, and no one else should be dictating what attitude we should or should not have.

  • Up Front: Something Chronic,

Thanks for sharing, Emma! A regular contributor alerted me to this discussion. I've been unwell with a chronic fatigue condition for about ten years now, and only recently had it diagnosed as M.E. I still feel like a fraud saying this as I've never believed this to be the case. When I've said this sort of thing to my doctor he simply repeats the four identifying symptoms, all of which I have: sleep problems, concentration and memory problems, HEADACHES, and chronic fatigue. Oh yes, and depression. Lovely - who wouldn't be! There is a possibility that he is right of course. But I had always identified it as arising from a combination of intense and prolonged distress combined with severe burnout. It's possible that this made me susceptible to developing M.E....

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned burnout. Burnout is a difficult subject to talk about given that doctors don't consider it to be a genuine medical condition, although any internet search of the subject brings up a huge number of results of doctors complaining about the high incidence of this problem within their own profession, a point I've never understood. What I've found most difficult in the duration of my illness has been lack of credibility (including my own), and the very marked lack of proper help, especially from those whose work it is to provide it. As a result I've written a resource kit for others who may be wandering in this trackless land which contains all the information I now have which I wish I had had then. There is an article about identifying M.E and another relating to Burnout, and many more. For those who may be interested I give the address here: http://rushleigh---the-wasteland-chronicle.blogspot.com/

In a companion Rushleigh blog I share sensible, thrifty ways of managing on less, the economy of which is often forced upon those of us who are deprived of the ability of earning anything approximating the average wage.

It's a very tough space, and I wish all of you strength, fortitude and good fortune. Thanks to Public Address for providing the forum for this discussion.
