  • Up Front: How About Now?,

With regard to everything changing over time, that is one of the 'secrets' of the longer relationships; allowing for your loved one to change, and for you to change, too, but at the same time working on the relationship to take the changes in your stride. I think a lot of people go into a marriage/CU with good intentions but stop working at it once the ceremony is over.

But that's when the work has to really start.

This from someone married for over quarter of a century, and we really only got married so My Darling could get NZ citizenship. (We were in love & everything, but to live in NZ she had to be married and, what the hell, we were up for it.)

  • Hard News: What the kids do,

Seems like decriminalisation of marijuana would be the easiest and most sensible route to take on this. It would cause a drop in demand for Kronic & other herb-substitutes, reduce gang profits as well as showing that the government can make reasoned decisions.

So fark-all chance of that happening, eh?

  • Hard News: Asking for a Contribution, in reply to Rich Lock,

Just alluding to the single malts that go to make up a Great Blend.
Not promising to be totally drunk on arrival but who knows?

And I would be interested in a PA blended whisky as I have faith in the erudition of the members and expect a superior product (greater than the sum of its parts).

  • Hard News: Asking for a Contribution,

You say you want a contribution
    We-ell, you know
We all want to change the world...

Be warned - I'll turn up at one of those Blendy things as a Single Malt.

  • Hard News: Friday Visions,

Thanks Jackie, that makes more sense than my version...
Why didn't I think to check urbandictionary?

Mate, what is YMMV? I've been meaning to ask for a while and the nearest acronym I could reverse-engineer was "You Make Me Vomit" and that doesn't fit in most cases where I've seen it.

  • Hard News: Gaying Out, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

I am just disappointed that he got pretty much drafted in as a shoo-in for his seat and then for PM, never spent an apprenticeship in the back benches, and isn't willing to do anything other than take the top job.

I'm glad you have respect for Helen Clark, cos I sure ain't got much for John I-agree-with-the-latest-poll Key.

  • Hard News: Gaying Out,

I was amazed that more wasn't made of Key's reluctance to embrace opposition when he announced it earlier. It came across as a "If I can't be the striker I'm taking my ball home and none of you can play" sort of remark.

He appears to want all the trappings and status of being PM but can't be bothered with being a leader of the opposition now he's ticked the "be PM" box. Truly, I can't admire that and I am surprised Craig has let this slide without comment.

  • Up Front: Giving Me Grief,

    Oh Emma,
I started reading your post at work this arvo, thinking 'Great, long time since I've read something from Emma' but I only got about 3 sentences in before I realised I couldn't go on without tears streaming down my cheeks. (Not a good look for a 50-something cynic).
So here I am at home in the evening, with tears streaming down my cheeks and wanting to send you another of those woefully inadequate virtual hugs that do nothing to diminish the sense of loss but help to shave away a little of the pain.

So many others have earlier expressed, far more eloquently than I could, the sentiments and support that I would like to whisper gently in your ear as I recall the deaths of my father and mother (separately and several years apart, but your wonderful piece has tapped a lot of the suppressed emotion) and our lovely dog Jake who had to be put to sleep just a month ago.

But the existence and immutable inevitability of death is what gives us life, so be sure to honour your darling Mum by living your life as fully as you can.

    You have touched my heart.

    Arohanui.
