  • Hard News: Some things just don't let…, in reply to peter mclennan,

Ah Peter, you have made me a very happy chap. Since my Hallelujah Picassos cassettes stretched & became unplayable (some years ago) I have had an occasional fossick for outlets that might allow me to buy a CD. And here you are with a 'compilation' re-issue that ticks plenty of boxes for a nostalgic old bastard.

It's on my Xmas list fersure.

I only managed to see the Picassos live the once - at Armadillo at teh top end of Symond St - no idea what year it was but I dragged a very good mate along and we both had an absolute ball. Oh happy days!

    Thanks again.

  • Speaker: Doing the right thing on retirement,

I think that John Key's "Show me the money" quote just indicates how far out of touch with 'ordinary' NZers he is. As if those sort of beliefs and (lack of) principles are relevant - he might as well have jabbered on about "Greed is good".

  • OnPoint: PREFU 2011: "What credit downgrade?", in reply to Craig Ranapia,

FFS Craig, I was not making any insinuation or statement about your 'purpose in life' and I can't see how you got that from what I wrote.
I wouldn't presume to try to convince you to vote in any way - so that part of your railing against my 'bloody advice' can be put to bed straight away.
And what is this b/s about me picking a bad year and it being epically bad timing? Am I meant to have some omniscient sense of when things are going wrong in your life? I'm not the stalker you think I am

And find enough manners to spell my name correctly, would you?

  • OnPoint: PREFU 2011: "What credit downgrade?", in reply to Craig Ranapia,

Is there some hot key where you can just insert political cant tailored to how you dress your ideological dick? I believe this is the point where I should respond with fatuous cant about how you're just engaged in the "politics of envy" but frankly can't be arsed.

Craig, you know nothing about my circumstances so any remark about 'politics of envy' is pure crap and speculation. I was responding with truth about how your lickspittle National Party doles out tax cuts that disproportionally advantage the rich and then use the financial result of that to excuse the cutting of services for those in our society that can least afford to have such cuts applied.

Forgive my concern for the least advantaged in our society and my dislike of those perpertating this situation - or at least give me the grace that you so readily apply to those whose dicks are dressed in a manner of which you approve.

Not sure about dialling back my rage and hatred - it's about all I have that these bastards don't want to take from me & give to their rich mates.

Governing for the good of all NZers rather than the already fiscally-advantaged would be a nice gesture that might prompt me dialling it back a bit...

  • Up Front: Casual, Shallow and Meaningless,

I have been known to use small talk to disconcert people, but only gently.
I know I can make some/most blokes squirm a bit if I volunteer something about my emotional state, especially if it is overwhelmingly positive.
A late-middle-age hetero bloke actually saying things like "I really like being in your company" makes them double-take and/or reassess my suitability as a friend.
(My friends are generally used to this by now, so not easily subverted.)

Most blokes find any discussion of almost anything to do with (their own or one another's) emotion too uncomfortable.

  • Hard News: The Sound of Music,

I have some doubt about the music contributing positively to the atmosphere at teh games - I'd say that the W'gton Sevens over the past few years, and the enormous amount of fun people obviously have there, has been a much bigger factor in getting kiwi fans to loosen up.

But I'll know more about that after the weekend as I'll actually be attending a couple of matches rather than sitting at home watching.

  • Hard News: The Sound of Music,

I've watched quite a number of the matches on tv and, to be honest, I haven't really noticed the music. Except the mariachi trumpet, which I am quite enjoying.

Of course, I have the tv muted until the haka is about to start (if the ABs are playing) or until the ref blows his whistle to start the match and I keep the commentators voices sotto voce but I hadn't really noticed the music.

[And I am fortunate enough not to even recognise the sound of the Black Eyed Peas, although I have heard of them...]

  • Hard News: The Politics of Absence,

Being a cynical bastard allows me to see a fair bit of cynicism in some of our elected representatives, but I'll tell you what - I am very impressed with Metiria Turei and would happily consider voting Green as a result.

I've generally been a considered Labour voter (and am amused at the prospect of parties wooing the mythical Waitakere Man as that would be me by label-definition if not by way of what is implied in the term) but I can't see them having a snowball's chance so I am considering voting for Sue Bradford, despite her association with Hone, because it cocks a snook at the repugnant Paula Bennett and the Greens as a party-vote.

I'll tick the ABN* box anytime.
