something that just occurred to me skimming these comments (soz... it's late), was this. we aren't building tent. aren't the arguments that it won't be filled all the time kind of beside the point?
the idea is to build something that'll be used for 10 or 15 years, then upgraded. the location will be great for that. as auckland matures into a city with world class things like public transport, and an urban centre, the stadium could be there for people to enjoy.
no really, just imagine that.... auckland, a city with an recognisable centre... sigh...
but, failing that, someone did point out that we could just include a free trip to melbourne/sydney in the price of the ticket. http://dropkicks.blogspot.com/2006/11/hire-stadium.html gotta be cheaper than the stadium itself....

doh. meant to say, "lets build this in ChCh instead".
matthewB, edit function?

to be honest? i agree with hudsie.
what's also great about melbourne is the love of sports. you could put on putt-putt at the MCG and you'll get 30k punters turn up.
further, tom's suggestion re: the additional PT during events is in line with my thinking. if you're spending a billion on a stadium (let's face facts, this will runneth over like the preverbial), then a few hundred k to keep the fans from driving drunk is very small change indeed.
and hadyn, people will spill out of the stadium and into the crowded and raucus bars of the downtown area. melbourne during the last rugby world cup was un-be-freakin-leivable.
as for getting started, there's a story that the old railways department has dozens of old carriages 'stored' off the end fo the wharves in auckland, so at least the stadium will have sound foundations....

nat, park and ride my friend. park, and ride.
does actually work a treat in melbourne, even in the suburbs outside the tram reach.
plus the atmosphere on public transport on game days is pretty fantastic. no grumpy commuters, just really excited and or apprehensive fans.
lastly, you can catch the PT back out to your wheels/neighbourhood, and taxi it back to your crib after all that tui for a big saving in $$.

having lived over the road from eden park (walters road), we routinely put up with incredible traffic woes, a complete lack of parking anywhere within a km of our own place, drunken parties in the carparks and people pissing in the oleander because... well because it was EDEN PARK.
would be better if the finals was near a revamped britomart, IMHO. just teach aucklanders that you don't always need to park your pajero out front of a stadium to have a good time.

the redevelopment of Spencer St station, in Melbourne, after the construction of the Colonial Stadium is a sight to behold.
i'm all for the stadium if, as you say, it can be built on time (i don't believe it can, dunno why, just 'gut feel'), and if the public transport aspect really comes through.
pretty much everyone in Melbourne uses PT to get to the sports precinct around the MCG, and to the Colonial Stadium (which was last called the Telstra Dome, i'm assuming it still is).
this is what a good stadium needs. public space so it's useful when games and gigs aren't being played, ease of access, and proximity to great things that complement it as a urban centre.

i wouldn't be too quick to confirm that difference in popular vote down as gerrymandering.
don't forget that the senate is not intended to be proportional to population. and deliberately so, as far as i recall.
