Call me paranoid, but what is the law enforcement situation with opening up ones WAP and ISP account to all?

That's not really how it would work. It wouldn't be your own ISP account being pillaged, but a matter of data being delivered from the edge of the network. Your WAP is just a network relay, and iirc there are specific protections for network operators. Telecom doesn't get busted every time someone's caught with kiddy porn.

  • Hard News: Mint Chicks win everything,

I sometimes think that NZ has no executive branch of government, just a legislature and an autonomous public service. I'm all for restraint on executive power, but we seem to have gone way out in the other direction.

But the government can't be seen to interfere with a police operation for what might -- what would -- be seen as political ends. Labour is already baselessly accused of same at every opportunity: if they did so in this case it would be disastrous.

And fair enough, really. Imagine (purely for purposes of comparison) if a National government tried to pressure the police to abandon an investigation into the Exclusive Brethren.

Judging by the Herald's story about Clark's briefing before the raids, she did have something to say about the conduct of the operation. But the cops couldn't read their te reo cheat-sheets properly ...

I think the failure to involve local police officers is going to be revisited. Did they not trust the local cops, or did they want to give the anti-terror squads a run? Or did they actually think they might get shot?

On the other hand ... I'm getting a bit tired of hearing phrases like "state terror" with respect to last Monday. If the cops could be accused of cheapening the word "terrorism", then so could Hone Harawira.

Given the two major local telcos and their ISPs have been working to knobble peering exchanges, I really can't see them emulating their European peers.

Which is where we might look for Mr Cunliffe to deliver on the rock-star image he earned himself at Foo Camp this year when he promised to address the peering problem.

There's mega advantages to it. Local file sharing, offsite backups, local cache generally.

Oh God. Imagine offsite backup at 54Mbps. That would be very handy.

And file-sharing -- ironically, the person who told me about the Pt Chev internet consumer rebellion is the local boss of one of the major record labels.

I'm sure these problems are soluble, but ultimately the actual organization will not be an amateur affair. Whoever sets up the connection to the net must be a pro, and there will be tech support, you can take that as guaranteed.

All good points. I've emailed Julian to see if he can drop by and explain the model they use in Europe.

That's in Europe, Rus, where they have this bizarre thing known as, well, competition. It's a bit of a strange concept in this neck of the woods.

Fer sure. That's where public and community fibre would come in handy. It's not about getting it to everyone's doorstep, just to every community.

Meanwhile, YouTube's New Zealand front door is open. Looks quite good.

  • YouTube's NZ site is open,

    http://nz.youtube.com/

Quite a bonus, given that the plan only a month or two ago was to make us share a portal with Australia.

They invited some of the more prominent local uploaders (including Dannews) to a launch function in Auckland this afternoon.

It'll certainly be a handy way to source stuff for OurTube.

When I was at Wellington Airport the other week -- and before I discovered the free wi-fi -- I could see CafeNet Melrose East access point. Couldn't connect, but I thought that was quite impressive.

If he smiles once during the show that'll be more often than Lou Reed did when I saw him :)

Dude, he's blowing kisses this year ...

I'd imagine the legal call was whether to include the TSA on the warrant, or just leave it with other acts.

I'm pretty sure Broad has actually said they took the kind of legal advice Graeme has mentioned before including the TSA charges.
