  • Hard News: Geeky Thursday again,

Yeah I worked for the CD & DVD Store too. Contrary to what head office often recommended we played our own (good and 'store playable') stuff ...

We'd get away with it quite a bit when I worked in the HMV Store in Piccadilly Circus. Except when there was a big, new release where we were told what to play for a week.

That Springsteen live thing was bearable, just. But the Phantom of the Opera soundtrack - good grief.

I was genuinely astounded at what terrible, ghastly fucking awful music that was. And I think we actually had to play it in store for two weeks.

My biggest concern when Weepu got dumped was the lack of depth we have at halfback in this squad ...

I'm not particularly worried about halfback -- if Kellerher got injured I'd be comfortable with Leonard starting. The locking positions are where cruel fate has left us very thin indeed.

And we can only pray that Big Carl continues his miraculous run. When you look at the work that man does in a test match, it's scary.

I guess Justin is just nostalgic for the days when he was the boy with the Thorne in his side ...

Everyone seems to think Flavell should be packing his bags, including Pat Lam, who's got him on a reconditioning programme for when the AB coaches call time on Robinson and his dodgy calf.

If he goes, he might just surprise.

And Russell, if you're such an Apple fanboy, how come Public Address radio isn't available as a Podcast in iTunes yet?

    It is!

    here.

It is oddly elusive, but the iTunes Store registration process is a bit inscrutable. You give them your info and they decide how they'll refer to it.

  • Hard News: Fabrication and humanity,

I think this is... not irrelevant, but not the issue. If the RSAA process is a private process, which uses anonymous case studies as part of their education and legal process, then it's not up to anyone to break that privacy, except the individual concerned.

You're right of course, but I do sometimes wonder if there's a risk of undermining public faith in the process. Justice being seen to be done and all that.

Wikipedia can kiss my big ol' ass.

Alright, without even looking at Wikipedia ...

An API (application programming interface) is some code that allows one piece of software to talk to and interact with another, and make use of another's features.

So if you're going to write a program for Windows, you'll need to relevant Windows APIs. If you want to write a game to run on an Xbox, you'll need the Xbox API, and if you want to mash Google Maps into your web application, you'll use the Google Maps API.

    Something like that.

__ it's a fairly striking example of the way that commercial radio is becoming irrelevant as a music discovery platform__.

Puh-lease! It's a drop in the bucket! You digital types forget that Joe Blow is lazy and really does stick to what he knows.

Oh, mainstream broadcast radio won't go away. It will just become progressively less relevant to music discovery and sales. Check out the NZ radioplay and sales charts since they were revamped earlier this year: they don't have a whole lot to do with each other.

Mainstream format radio is basically about supplying people with what they already know. Music discovery will now increasingly take place on social sites and via online retail. Getting on the Starbucks playlist that hooks up with the WiFi iTunes and the iPhone/iPod will be quite important in the US. It fulfills the desire that conventional radio can't: what is that tune? I want to own it! Gadzooks! I made an impulse purchase!

Why is it people don't like Bill O'Reilly? :-)

It's the part about him being a conceited, lying bully, I think.

RE: touch iPod. I put my ipod in my pocket and use the scroll wheel through the jeans, can i still do this with the touchscreen?

What you touch in that area is strictly your business ...
