Anyhoo, I found the statement "If student loans were a business they would be running at a loss"

I meant to add, at that point...
"Well, Don't run it as a business then, Knobface"

  • Speaker: Why Auckland, and New Zealand,…, in reply to Russell Brown,

    Nowhere near it.

Well, I have to admit to being a little disingenuous there ;-)
    BUT...
I think you will find that the total cost of Brittomart, including the undergrounding of the rail on Customs St, exceeded that total by quite a margin and that was in 2001 dollars and didn't include the cost of borrowing by Auckland City Council.
I'm guessing here but I would imagine that the cost of the City Loop has been deliberately inflated to lower the BCR. Bloody Joyce.

Hey, give us right wingers a break.

Hey, how about you right whingers give the 99% a break? (which, ironicaly , includes most of the right wingers too)
Anyhoo, I found the statement "If student loans were a business they would be running at a loss" to mean "we will run student loans as a loan shark would and then sell it"
It is bad enough that a generation of people that had zero fees at university not only want to make students pay for a University that is now run like a business, as opposed to an institution of learning, but want to make a business out of those loans to sell off to whoever can afford to buy in.
If those in government were any bloody good at running a business why aren't they doing that instead of fucking with the economy?.
Do they have some kind of agenda?.

We have been through all this before. When Les Mills wanted to build his monument, Brittomart Station, the excuse given was that the existing Station was too far from the city and the commuters, poor dears, could not be expected to walk that far, just under a kilometre.
The old station had and still does, have a large space at the front that could have been used for buses ans saved the poor souls the trouble of walking but no, the "Award Winning" station had to be built.
With the money saved by not building Brittomart we could have had a "world class" transport system for our "world class" City.

In the UK food has been exempt from VAT since its inception as have childrens clothing, , as far as I can recall. Even Take Away meals were exempt and we all know how lazy Poms are, they wouldn't do it if it was hard.

Of course the system could be abused.

'AMERICAN POET,' KEY, DENOUNCED AS RED SPY; Budapest Newspaper Exposes Him--He Played Expensive Jokes.

    Wireless to THE NEW YORK TIMES. ();
    May 29, 1930,

BUDAPEST, May 28.--"An American poet named John Key," said to be a millionaire, about whose eccentric behavior Yugoslav newspapers recently have published columns, was denounced in the newspaper Esti Kurir today as a Soviet spy.

<q> A Son Murders His Father and Shoots an Old Man Seventy Years of Age.

Last Saturday our community was thrown into an intense excitement by the murder of JOHN R. KEY and the shooting of MOSES GIVENS, about a mile from this city. The killing was done by young JOHN KEY, a son to the murdered man, with a pistol, in the afternoon.

Is there no end to this man’s evil doings?.

A lot of my friends are journalists, none of which are slackers.
Journalism has little to to with editorial policy.

  • Hard News: We interrupt this broadcast ..., in reply to merc,

why has no journalist again asked what Key intends to do after the election!

Because anybody who lived through that last time they got a second term already knows?.
It bothers me that so many young people and recent immigrants are backing National in ignorance of history and that the media driven fear of Labour is eating away at democracy.
Nobody is saying that Labour are perfect, nothing in life is, but to throw away the gains made under 9 years of good and stable Government for the enrichment of the few just seems like total stupidity to me.
