Stripping (uninformed) opinion away to leave facts presented without bias is a large part of the “value added” by reputable news sources

It's also impossible. Any selection of presented facts will be biased, through the selection of those facts, the tone of the presentation, the choice of voices, etc.

This needn't be conscious. The day to day beat reporting of most NZ media doesn't overtly *aim* to portray a lawless society under siege from criminal brown people - that's just the effect they achieve.

My morning radio (Active FM) has recently begun to deliver a counter-narrative, simply by leading the news with a number of world stories before any domestic coverage.

    It's all bias.

It wouldn't be hard to code. Trouble is, they might send you to jail for it.

The Scorpion light tank is aluminum, also. Did fine in the Falklands, although the ones NZ bought apparently didn't stand up to our drivers.

The problem with a lot of Cold War era weaponry, at least in the UK, was that it was designed around a strategy of "fight like mad for a week, then blow up the world". So durability and casualty minimisation wasn't much of a concern.

One idea is that a certain large US governmental organisation has been keen on funding moderate left-of-centre publications in the past. Maybe they'd be keen on throwing a few million dollars at a website that was critical, but not too critical, if you see what I mean.

Something I'd like, which might be easier to do than in-depth reporting, is an online version of the morning news on student radio. Headlines and stories, with a liberal bias (*everything* has a bias), cribbed as needed (but paraphrased) from various mainstream and other sources.

The problem (which is why Wikinews flopped) would be getting people to work a reliable rota. Maybe it could incorporate student radio - has this ever been suggested?

I'll have you know the d'Rich's are an ancient and noble family of Norman-English-Icelandic lineage.

Of course, I go by another name for purposes that involve earning money. If I posted stuff that wouldn't offend those who give me said money, my posts would be decidedly dull, sadly.

  • Legal Beagle: Strange bedfellows,

I guess one argument is that having a referendum over a few minor tweaks would be a waste of energy on a subject few people care about.

An alternative might be to have a wider ranging constitutional review, maybe considering areas such as making BORA and the Treaty basic (overriding) law, the role of the G-G and 'royal' prerogative, etc.

Part of this could maybe be to consider requiring a fair voting system as an immutable part of the constitution, and then allowing Parliament room to legislate on the details of that.

It occurs to me that if a few soldiers didn't die in wars, we wouldn't have the justification to spend $75mln on the Buckle St tunnel/memorial park.

Although we'll always have a steady stream of troops killing themselves in accidents, a 'military accident memorial' doesn't have the same ring.

  • Legal Beagle: MMP Review: Trusting Voters, in reply to Andrew Geddis,

There's an argument that if we got rid of the threshold, we should also adopt a counting system that requires more votes for the first MP.
