Russell's point is useful.... that over time, the second generation of immigrants merges, and creates something new with the host culture.
Which often involves rediscovering one's original culture too.
At last year's Banana conference, there were personal stories aired about growing up here that I think people found very moving. Which makes sense: it's an event about being Chinese in New Zealand.
I can understand why Keith, as a 1.5er, could do without some kid who's going to be here five minutes bellowing about the "international student cause" and "don't let the side down!". He has other fish to fry. Or possibly steam.

absolutely Russell. I suffered from culture shock something terrible when I first got there. I was completely surprised by how "other" it was.
Which of course eventually becomes a desire to bang your head against the wall when some FOBs turn up and complain about the weather and that the shops don't sell exactly the same products that they're used to.
Although I never regarded myself as British. A Londoner, certainly, but British, no.

I'm sure plenty of Samoan and Tongans who came here in the 60s for jobs might well have preferred to stay in the Islands and away from New Zealand's comparative lack of respect for their traditions, but they didn't feel they had much choice.
And for a long time, there was a gulf between parents and their traditions, and their New Zealand children -- it caused a few problems. What cracked it for PI communities was the emergence of an urban pasifika culture that is about being a Samoan New Zealander and has heroes, role models and a sense of place.

When I talked to Mr Brown in Singapore recently, we got onto the conference, and he expected he was going to find it interesting because he wasn't used to thinking about being Chinese: it was just life.
(Although I did have a taxi driver who seemed extremely aware of being Malaysian, and assiduously pointed out all the places the Malays got to first.)
Which might explain the slightly hectoring tone of some of the SkyKiwi comments. When you do got somewhere where you're the other, it's inevitable that ideas about identity are going to be cast in sharper focus.
We (as it says on the census form) European New Zealanders usually do that when we pop "home" to Britain. Even though we're not all that different, we get an increased sense of not actually being European. Well I did, anyway.
How 'bout you, Tze Ming? When you're in China, do you feel more or less Chinese?

A special report produced by Glynis Bartlam on the social sites boom: who are the users and what are they doing? And we bet you didn't know Facebook was a front for the CIA ...
This is the fixed version of the file - the first post had nearly 2 mins missing at the end ...

Check out Your Views on the Herald site. It seems very evident that the sound in that venue varies wildly depending on where you happen to be. It shouldn't be a damn lottery.
I gather it's fixable with acoustic panels. In which case, they should bloody well fix it. We didn't wait forever for an indoor arena to have one that doesn't work properly.

Maybe you could have an article published here on occasion...
I was going to say that. Any time you do want a conversation I/S, consider the offer open.
-
I think there's a section at the end missing though - the last 1:45. Anyone else have that problem?
Bollocks. So there is. I'll fix it now.

I promise never to post such a long comment here again.
Happy to have it.
BTW, Nielsen NetRatings consistently places Public Address the #1 website in the country for time spent on each page ...

__After seeing Dylan on Saturday I never want to go to Vecta Arena again!__
Where were you sitting? I was half way back on the floor, and the show sound absolutely superb.
This tends to bear out the comments from the Chili Peppers' sound guy -- until the venue gets some proper acoustic panelling there will be serious holes in the sound in some parts of the room. It's a shame they had to spend all that money and make a half-assed job of making it work as a concert venue.
