  • Hard News: Out of the Groove,

Is there any need for a national youth radio network in NZ? Doesn't the b-net cover it nicely? Certainly I'd rather listen to any of the BNet stations than to JJJ over here and I'd also reckon that the community stations like RRR and PBS would be better off if they weren't effectively being poor brothers to JJJ.

My main concern was the potential impact on the good regional independent and community stations. If you put in a dedicated youth network and it kills a great little station like Fresh FM in Nelson, I don't think that's a good result.

I tried to develop ideas for a more co-operative model, where YRN programming was made available to independent stations. Neil and I actually had a meeting with Theresa Gattung (who was keen to earn cultural brownie points with the the government at the time) and it seemed it might be possible to build an IP network to distribute programming, and also help indie stations produce programming for the rest of the network. But the goalposts subsequently moved a lot on the kind of price Telecom would be able to offer for that kind of network. I was extremely unimpressed by that.

There's a nice example of that kind of co-operation in the Public Radio Exchange in the US.

The other thing that troubled me was how little of the cost of a monolithic network would actually go into what you'd hear on air. There was a lot of expensive iron involved.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure that the voluntary targets put the kibosh on the YRN. The commercial broadcasters hated the YRN idea so passionately they were prepared to give an lot of ground on something they hated slightly less: local content quotas.

  • Open source on tv,

I made the 300k version embed - if you mouse-over the image, play controls come up.

But it does just start loading. Is this too annoying? Should I change it back?

Oh, and I'm damned if I can find the link for the mashable clips from the report on the Close Up page of the inscrutable TVNZ website. Can anyone help there?

  • Island Life: Sorted for E's and Votes,

heh. i was offered pcp at a party many years ago.

a quick bit of research revealled the side effects; potential nerve damage, inability to reason, blah blah blah. the che wasn't touching the stuff, wasted as he already was.

Yes. I've never been squeamish about these things, but PCP and datura never seemed like a good bet.

  • Hard News: Compromise,

stand by for a long post on the subject from Simon Grigg - he released their stuff here back in the day (or was that just Phillips & Urlich?) before they got grabbed by the majors ...

Yes! The Princess single, 'Say I'm Your Number One', which is actually a classic pop record.

My buddy Ant worked at their studios while Samantha Fox was recording there. He said she was good for a yarn or two.

We don't tithe? Then who's been banking those cheques I've been sending off each week? And who sent me my decoder ring?

I did, Damian. Do you think I make money off blogging, FFS?

Russell: did you ask him "What's up with the pants?"

Actually, he was on an exercycle for the whole interview, so I guess the lycra was fitting. So to speak.

The highlight of the evening was accidentally catching one of the huge tour security guys delivering "medicine" to the dressing room of one of Hammer's support acts, Michele (that's Mee-shell-ay). Which rather undermined the whole drug-free high-on-life Hammer show PR ...

I actually interviewed MC Hammer while he was wearing lyrca cycle shorts. True story.

yep, you sure said a lot there Sarah. the best thing to have come from this shit-fight is that more and more people are starting to seriously question both the morality and efficacy of that kind of so-called parenting.

I very much agree. For all that it was maddening and sometimes unpleasant the smacking debate has changed the environment. Maybe even, in the short term, more than the legislation itself.
