Actually Craig, I was expressing my scepticism of such simplistic equations –

Quite right - and sorry for not being entirely clear about that in my snark of a silly idea you don't actually hold.

If National is so publicly committed to asset sales and there is such overwhelming opposition, then logically, they should have lost badly.

No, Ambassador Sarek, I think your logic is flawed where you son is concerned. Obviously, Labour took a hell of punt that this was not only unpopular but an absolute triple-bottom line deal breaker for a critical mass of voters. Apparently not. Just as, I suspect, in 2005 plenty of Labour voters didn’t actually like the {sarcasm} politically correct Marxist tree-hugging, Maori lezzer-coddling front-bottom social policy agenda {/sarcasm} but not enough to vote elsewhere.

Not for the first time, I think voters are a little more complex – and a lot less stupid – than the media-political complex gives them credit for.

Probably. But maybe if you accept it as a “post election hangover first response”. I hope Craig, you know I wouldn’t mean it.

I'll write it down to a case of 24-hour PEST (Post-Election Stress Trauma), because you're infinitely more classy. I prescribe a nice mug of sweet milky tea and a mega-dose of buttery jam-loaded toast. :)

    They got 48%.

Biggest share of the party vote anyone received in an MMP election. Which is not a "record majority" - you'd have to climb into the wayback machine and nerd-fu FPP election results to find that. I can't really be arsed.

So it takes an earthquake to change a staunch labour electorate. The Nats should pray for a few more in the next three years.

Bad taste, Ross. Very bad taste.

I think Labour has to transform now.

At the risk of sounding like a downright concern-troll, a good place to start would be to stop using the list as incumbent insurance/the most brutally efficient recycling scheme ever. Yes, it wasn't pretty in National when some dead wood got exactly the list placings they earned but whatevs... Somehow, the party survived the likes of Brian Connell and Brian Neeson having public tanties.

And that Labour’s only new list MP is Andrew Little, who ran a useless campaign in New Plymouth.

Especially when we're talking about flipping the most marginal seat in the country from, let's face it, an incumbent who isn't exactly from the deep end of the National Party gene pool.

  • Hard News: Democracy Night,

    First thoughts:

    1) Must walk my talk, and respect the 135,000 electors who cast their party votes to return to Parliament a man I hold in utter contempt. OK, media get off your knees, wipe your chins and hold Winston Peters and his ghost chips caucus to account.

    2) Am I the only person who loves Christchurch even more after ChCh Central handed down the most awesome election night WTF EVER?

    3) Shitters for Chris Auchinvole, but Labour re-taking West Coast-Tasman was probably about the only bright spot in a pretty dismal night.

    4) 27.13% actually good for Phil Goff. Seriously.

Correct. If a party does not represent me, then they do not earn, let alone own my vote.

The “left” is not Labour’s bitch. The “right” is not National’s bitch. The center don’t have to take big party cock from either end – it can be as electorally slutty as it pleases.

    Not rocket science, people.

Now, can we stick a fucking fork in FPP-style “born to rule” prickery because it’s not only done, it’s maggoty and beginning to reek.

Have a good one tomorrow, folks. But if the outcome isn't to your liking, at least try to pay due respect to the free, fair and credible general election that's going to happen tomorrow. Especially if you don't like the outcome.

  • Hard News: Last Words, in reply to Isaac Freeman,

Labour people I speak to seem to see them only as the party that steals “Left” votes that rightfully belong to Labour.

And to be fair, I knew plenty of folks on the Nat side of the ledger who had the same attitude towards ACT – a raiding party of nasty little Vikings “cannibalising” (to use Tom’s charming phrase) the fertile women and sheep that belong to us.

To paraphrase Neil Gaiman’s infamous smack down of fans with entitlement issues: The electors of this country are not your bitches. Deal with it.
