  • Southerly: If You Don't Hit Them, You…,

Riddley W: Your account of the current legal situation and of any post-s59 situation is absurd.

Smacking your own child to correct them etc. is legalized now by s 59 of the Crimes Act just the way getting an abortion before the 20th week is legalized now by s 187(a)(1) of the Crimes Act.

Delete either one and something that was formerly legal becomes illegal. It's temporizing of the worst sort to deny this.

Um, so a woman who has an abortion (with the help of several publicly-funded doctors) can be prosecuted, but is able to cite that section as a defence when she gets to court? Really? Your analogy seems rather odd.

  • Hello!,

Hi folks. This is the new Public Address Radio blog, for the Public Address Radio show, 2pm Saturdays on Radio Live.

Quite soon, there will be links to things we've covered in the show and also some lovely MP3 podcasts. But that will be after the show actually airs.

Leave a comment if you like!

  • Hard News: Human Space Invaders,

As noted in other threads I'm against it. And I don't like the fact that scary loons agree with me for whatever bizarre reasons of their own. But that's a necessary outcome of having principles.

Otherwise, I'd never take up water colour painting, because Hitler did too.

Fair enough. But do you trust the "scary loons" to know the meaning of reasonable force?

  • Hard News: Human Space Invaders,

Too kind, Russell. Can I just say here that I don't lump you as an opponent of the Iraq War in with the photogenic anti-Semitic loons that seem to attach themselves to every anti-war rally out there? Or should that actually not need to be said? You can find lunatic extremists and over-heated rhetoric on all sides of every issue, and I don't think it really adds much to a sensible debate to try and tar everyone on the 'other side' with that brush.

Arggh ... deja vu all over again. I thought it was simply polite to point out that the majority of opponents of the bill, and certainly those here, aren't loonies.

But I think it's a stone-cold fact that the worst behaviour in this debate has come from pro-smackers. They're the ones calling Katherine Rich and threatening her children; they're the ones posting nasty comments on a range of sites and fantasing about killing Sue Bradford and publishing MPs' home addresses on CYFS Watch. I'm not talking about people who I simply disagree with, or even people who annoy me, I'm talking about people who really creep me out. People who I would not trust to know the meaning of reasonable force.

And I can't recall an issue that has drawn out so many of those people as this one has. I'll be glad when it's over so I can go back to not having to think about those people.

  • Hard News: The Solipsistic Left,

James, I disagree that there is such a fundamental flaw in Islam, or that there is any significant difference with Christianity. I do agree that at present there are more Muslims that aspire to spread their religion violently but I believe that is caused by young men coming from conservative tribal backgrounds and feeling alienated by modernity. With a few lunatics like bin Laden thrown in.

The wahabists can count more than a few well-educated, modern young men in their ranks. Indeed, their recruiting methods concentrate in part on wooing young men in Western universities. They're a little like the old communist states in that respect, and perhaps others too.

  • Hard News: The Solipsistic Left,

i'll probably kick myself for getting involved in this, but had to share this, which i recieved today (take from it what you will):

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

Hi Anjum - thanks for this. And I hope you don't have to kick yourself :-)

The idea here is that it's a lively debate where everyone feels safe to contribute.

  • Speaker: Part 13: Rattue: A Vegetable Stew,

One is compelled to agree with Rattue – this little more protracted affair, a dwindling romance.

I dunno - what happened in the SA-Sri Lanka game today was pretty memorable.

  • Hard News: Feeling good,

Attitude is a really cool programme. Every episode is inspiring without being sentimental, and I've come to realise that there are so many people with disabilities out there who live ordinary lives.

They did a story about the casting of a Downs Syndrome character in a recent episode of Shortland Street - followed the auditions and everything - but it's not online yet. I hope they put it up, because that ep was amazingly well-handled. The young woman who got the role had a lot of lines and was really good. Apparently she and all the other young women who auditioned are big Shorty fans, which makes it even better.

But I also want to know when I'll be able to see This Is New Zealand! I want to experience it for the first time!

Stay tuned. The Archives NZ people seemed quite open to the prospect of us organising a screening.
