  • Hard News: Quantum Faster,

Yup. This parliament's Bob Clarkson's been found early?

What is it about Bob Clarkson that makes you think he should be and David Garrett belong in the same category?

Bob found out early on that Parliament really wasn't the place for him, he had a colourful vernacular, but in short he was a good honest kiwi bloke (but one who was a teetotaller). He had political disagreements with others in the House, but had a good relationship with Nándor Tánczos etc. etc.

  • Hard News: Quantum Faster,

    That's a ludicrous false equivalence.

Just to be clear, I hope you've noted that I'm not comparing Clark with Bush, but people who can't get over Clark with people who can't get over Bush.

  • Hard News: Quantum Faster,

it's going to be a long three years with David Garrett, isn't it?

I was thinking about this yesteday. It does seem a little churlish, but I think a valid comparison is with people who can't get over Bush.

There are people who believe Bush violated the Constitution and broke the law, was corrupt etc. A lot of them aren't shutting up, they want investigations and recriminations. It's a rational position - they believe what Bush did was so bad, that there has to be some consequence beyond just being out of office, because without some consequence, no-one will realise that it was wrong, that it shouldn't happen, and then someone may try to do something similar again.

If someone feels the same way about Clark - Presidents shouldn't sack US Attorneys, PMs shouldn't sack Police Commissioners, etc. - it might be uncomfortable for those who've taken over her office (as calls for prosecutions of Bush are uncomfortable for the Obama administration), but I don't think they should shut up.
If Garrett refused to stand because of some honest disagreement over policy, that's a little immature; but if it's over what those people whom you might refer to as wingnuts view as unforgivable corruption, then it's the proper thing to do, even if it won't make him popular.

  • OnPoint: Being a dick about Earth Hour,

So, Keith, which is better for the enviroment?

    A. not getting a plastic bag from Borders? or
    B. getting a plastic bag from Borders, and paying them 10c which goes to their specified environmental cause?

  • Hard News: Quantum Faster,

Richard Worth was the third most popular candidate on Facebook, after John Key, and Helen Clark.

Was it because he's not Rodney Hide?

No. It was because whoever was behind it, repeatedly tried to friend everyone who was a friend of anyone he friended. The person behind the analysis (I'd usually mention them by name, because I think it will be a chapter in VUW's post-election book, but I found it out under the Chatham House rule) has a policy of not friending anyone unknown to them personally, and rejected Richard's advances 3 or 4 times.

My guess is that it was some sort of internal joke by the staff responsible for keeping these updated. It is pretty funny =)

  • Hard News: Quantum Faster,

I'm actually fine that edits are made by the individual concerned if they're identified as such.

I thought this way of going about it was a pretty good one. When the EFB was going through, Nicky Hager made a comment about how, as drafted, it might have been something the Nazis would have done (but that those problems would obviously be fixed up).

He posted this on the talk page:

Note to editors of this page: the supposed quotation from me on the page ("nazi" etc) is taken so much out of context that it completely changes the meaning. This mischievous citing of me has been pointed out publicly already and it is disappointing to see it here. Can it please be removed? signed Nicky Hager 203.97.100.250 22:32, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

Perhaps that's what you might want to do, Russell - to stop it happening again, but avoid editing stuff about yourself?

Good point, though I know he (or someone who works for him) has certainly heard of Facebook. He "friended" me and many others I know before the last election. I left him on my list to see what use he made of it, but never heard another word.

A post-election analysis discovered that Richard Worth was the third most popular candidate on Facebook, after John Key, and Helen Clark.

  • Hard News: Quantum Faster,

PPS: Internal Affairs minister Richard Worth has been assiduously removing unflattering news from his own Wikipedia article. There's plenty more here. Oh dear.

Do we know it's him? Has anyone checked.

Hands up those who think Richard Worth has heard of wikipedia.

In other news: RussellBrownNZ has been editing his own wikipedia page as well. Imposing the Microsoft hegemony on everyone ... I don't know =)

In further news: I knew wikipedia was easy to sign up to, but I didn't remember it being that easy. A username and a password. Awesome.

  • Hard News: Quantum Faster,

my money was always on either Paula Bennett or Anne Tolley to be the first cabinet minister to cover themselves in mud. But a dark horse has entered the race and appears to be galloping into the lead.

You think Richard Worth will be promoted to cabinet?

Although, I note you're not the only one. I think it was a DomPost article which called him a "senior" government minister...

From Philip Wakefield in the DomPost's TV Week (on-line here).

The Colbert Report starts on NZ television on Wednesday ... apparently Sky now has a Comedy Central channel (...that won't be airing The Daily Show ).
