Mmm Problem novels - I was very fond of Kate Di Goldi's Sanctuary and her 10 pm Question was one of my favourite reads. Funnily enough I often fail to enjoy the books she recommends. I just don't get Margo Lanagan.
The Changeover - ahhh, loved and admired that and agree with you about Prudence M Muggeridge, Damp Rat. Must reread Bridge to Terabithia.
Can you recommend books for boys???
And yes, for a short investment of time, one can get a wealth of entertainment and insight from YA novels. Have to admit I read Twilight on the basis of a Time article before the books became wildly popular and I enjoyed it. The books got sicklier as time went on ... but the way the author described girlish urges rang true with me - at the start anyway! -
Young adult fiction is a favourite genre of mine, so thanks for the review. Can't wait to read GOTD.
Also found the Listener book page helpful - went a step below YA fiction to the "intermediate" category and have just finished "Trash" by Any Mulligan.Thriller - slum boys against the world. I enjoyed it but of course it was not as rich in detail as a YA book.

Have enjoyed the You Tubes.
The below put a smile on my face. Burly boys doing Bad Romance. It's a facebook video and I've no idea how to incorporate it or a You Tube into my response ...

This is not good for the left! That they would even consider him for the job … He has been vile lately.
And why does there have to be a dominant male presenter and a softer, even ditzy, female co-presenter? -
They have no answer to Chinese capitalism, the starkest proof of both the effectiveness and the moral bankruptcy of the extreme right ideology.
Great response Ben

I've kind of lost the thread here but I would like to share the below with you. I've just discovered kiwipolitico, through Public Address I might add, and I like it.
I think a rational and clear thinking exposition is always cheering. And all is never lost.

Craig - I didn't take Islander's remark as a particularly loaded comment. The tweeness of the pyjama rule made me think Peter Jackson had lost the common touch too. But thanks to the link to the Emma Woods story. Very, very good.
I've just read the latest Holmesism. Delicious.
The right were able to hammer him for being an elite, isolated intellectual, I suppose the kind of person I regard suspiciously here who listens to National Radio and reads the Listener and believes we should never mine the conservation estate. They see him as really left wing, if not a socialist, the kind of person, actually, for whom National Radio is designed. He needs to lighten up.

Holmes, Hobbit, Sir Peter, private jet, compulsory pyjamas …
The latter are so twee and fit in with the diverted streams and man-made lakes in his Wairarapa property. Add to that the hobbit holes in the garden and you have a guy who is stuck in a childish fantasy land. LOTR and the Hobbit are STORIES. Great stories but just stories. Stories from England.I don’t hate Peter Jackson, I used to admire him as much as anyone. Remember Forgotten Silver? That was brilliant. But when he became rich and famous he lost his original voice. He and his writing team sentimentalised the wonderful ending to Tolkien’s trilogy, they made an overblown King Kong and God knows what they’ll do to the Hobbit.
I know he didn’t really want to direct the Hobbit and I can respect the situation he’s in. I actually admired the way he talked in the Close Up interview. He has to fight for his film. He’s still a good guy in so many ways …
But when people go around calling him Sir Peter and a genius, I baulk at that. A genius would make more considered films than his last 3 or 4. He is wonderfully skilled at bringing people together for gigantic projects – maybe this is what people mean by genius. As a filmmaker … right now… I don’t think so.

My 3 month old grandson is getting the otter book. He has already read Hairy McClary.
