  • Hard News: Anatomy of a Shambles,

Not sure whether anyone has posted this interesting perspective from a lawyer with US experience.

    Thanks - interesting article.
Hell, I don't know what to think. I'm crossing everything in the hope that The Hobbit stays here for the sake of our film workers but my "left-wing filth" tendencies (thanks Paul Holmes) make me uneasy about the whole thing. Add to that the disenchantment I developed re Peter Jackson about three films ago ... I'm a mess.

I don't know if anyone else has linked to the kiwipolitico column below.

  • Hard News: Anatomy of a Shambles,

    English - this morning

He said it was possible Warner Bros was using the industrial dispute to push an agenda for more tax breaks, which are estimated to be worth $50 million to $60 million.

Last night on Close Up Brownlee downplayed tax breaks - it was all about employment issues. He was a tad hesitant when an unusually assertive Sainsbury questioned him on this.

  • Hard News: Yet More Hobbit,

"Fuck off you rich pricks and take your $700 million with you" is pretty much the elusive central tenant of the union's argument here, isn't it?

Do you think our actors are that dumb? I didn't hear Morning Report this morning. Damn. But has any media outlet anywhere conducted an in depth interview with any of the actors?

  • Speaker: Dancing with Dingoes, Part I,

I opened PA hoping to see some sort of comment on the awful actors or the greedy teachers who sent the Hobbit overseas and the third formers home.

Never mind. I enjoyed your story a lot. Keep us posted.

  • OnPoint: On Freedom of Speech,

Henry's series of comments were more like an ADHD run than an offering in the marketplace of ideas.

    That's good.

But don't his comments arise from his beliefs and values? And if you look at Kiwi Blog, aren't certain beliefs and values more aligned to National? Isn't the discussion on Kiwiblog indicative of that?

I'm not trying to make you angry Craig. I'm just interested in the idea of free speech and the role of a state-owned broadcaster.

  • OnPoint: On Freedom of Speech,

Political neutrality is not about political speech you happen to like or agree with.

True but I was trying to say that Henry didn't really have freedom of speech. Such freedom is always tempered.

And Henry is a National party supporter isn't he? I don't think he quite succeeded in remaining neutral on TVNZ.

As for racist comments, what I meant was that Pippa and Ali and Peter didn't come out with blatant remarks about other people's race. He was given the freedom to do so so and their role was to act mildly shocked. What was that all about?

  • OnPoint: On Freedom of Speech,

Can there be such a thing as pure freedom? Pure freedom of speech? We have censorship; swear words are bleeped out in prime-time. We can’t commit slander.
We expect political neutrality and a respect for people from a state broadcaster. I don’t think Paul Henry had the perfect right of free speech on Breakfast. None of the other presenters made racist comments as far as I know. In defiance of some sort of expected standard or control, he was given a certain freedom which others would not even ask for. There have been many complaints over the years but a concerted sniggering campaign against India culminating in the Dikshit and Sir Anand comments was the last straw.
I don’t think you can blame people, Graeme, for disliking the man as well as his words. I feel kind of bad about the witchhunty nature of the clamour against him but he brought it on himself. We can blame TVNZ too but he has to be responsible for his words.
Funny, isn’t it, that John Key was more critical of Michael Laws.

  • Hard News: Morning in Auckland,

Hearing some ignorant, uncontextualised blather about "freedom of speech" - even from some surprising quarters like Wallace Chapman.

Yes. Surprising but well argued, I thought.

I'm flabbergasted by the support for Henry; so far I've seen pro-Henry comments on fb from people I know. This is shaping up to be a 2nd Springbok Tour issue??? Splitting us?

  • Hard News: Morning in Auckland,

    Close Up ran a poll

I saw that. Only 18% voted Yes. Was that because of the question or because they are Henry supporters??? We'll never know.

  • Hard News: Morning in Auckland,

Interesting observations about Henry's transformation into a clown.

    Fascinating link. Thank you.

When I watched the clip about Sheila Dikshit (Henry giggling and Peter Williams squirming) I thought, here is a man out of control, drunk on his own ego ...

I'd love to be a fly on the wall and hear what Peter Williams said when Paul Henry was suspended. He was smiling this morning and tried hard to make little quips and brighten up the programme.

To make some sort of comparison I watched Campbell Live tonight to see how John Campbell was faring. It was TERRIBLE. He went from shots of an absolutely distraught Macsyna King to something on Kim Kardashian. While the tragic story of the Kahui twins was playing there was script on the screen about trivial stuff. OMG.
