Hard News: How do you sleep?, in reply to
I used to sleep very well, by which I mean that I never thought about sleep, I just did it. Or i didn't and then I did later. Then I had an event, and then I didn't sleep, and then for the next 8 years I struggled with insomnia, which at times was chronic.
Just so, for me too.

Our lad was not a great sleeper and I had periodic insomnia for his first ten years or so. Awful, and anyone with this has my deepest sympathy. It's much, much better now. What works really well for me is what Kate said - a bit of exercise/fresh air really helps. Also - reading in bed until I doze off. Works a treat though I know it goes counter to that advice about bed only for sex and sleep.
I have noticed that there are strong patterns involved - if for some reason you wake up at 3am you are also more likely to do this the following night, and so on.
A suggestion i've heard is to replay the events of the whole day in your mind, right from when you first woke up, remembering every little detail in the right order but resisting the temptation to analyse or get distracted. Sounds a bit weird but it did seem to work at calming thought patterns.

She .. is known as an ace networker.
Heh. That's one way of looking at what she and Len were up to.

Dave Armstrong is also inclined to give John Key credit for his reaction to all this.

Nonetheless, it appears that the council is now to conduct a formal investigation into that aspect of the story.
I've got just the title for their report: The Anti-luminaries.

But the poll on Stuff says he should not resign! Now what?!
Immaterial. The poll that should count was the election itself.
As for timing, well, it seems calculated to cause the maximum possible chaos and damage. What an unspeakably vile piece of work Cameron Slater is, and I'm not forming a very good impression of Ms Chuang either.

Well thank you, learned sirs.

Q. 1 If the person in the spotlight didn't commit the murder, then who did?
But that's got nothing to do with the trial of the person in the spotlight. Our system is based on the premise of innocent until proven guilty, and the prosecution must put up a strong beyond-reasonable-doubt case.
On a slight tangent, a lawyer friend once told me that there is a legal principle that it is better for a guilty person to go free than for an innocent person to be locked away. I always wondered about this; it doesn't exactly seem self-evident to me; can any of our resident legal beagles shed any light?

Your children will be as-yet too young, but my rather ghoulish young teenager was thrilled by the dungeons. There were re-enactments of various ghastly episodes from Edinburgh's history including Sawney Bean the cannibal, the grave robbers Burke and Hare, and William Wallace, by a troupe of young actors.
Other things we liked were the Scottish Museum and its excellent dinosaurs; haggis nachos; and our gorgeous bed and breakfast with shortbread and little decanters of sherry provided. -

I preferred Kim Hill’s interview with Lorde yesterday here. Pretty impressive for a 16 year old to hold her own against KH. She came across as very warm and funny too, which I didn’t really get from the op-ed.
