  • Hard News: Veitch,

What's more, his $300,000 seems to have been very well-spent, in terms of the outcome from his perspective. He really should STFU.

  • Hard News: Veitch,

There's not a whole lot I can add to this very informative thread, other than to say that, for my money, one of the most obnoxious things the guilty party has said relates to the spying-and-snooping he authorized:

"I did some investigating and I went and I dug and I went through records and I went through disclosure and you know what ... I had a good time and I found stuff," he said.

So he admits to getting his kicks this way. What a prat.

Reminds me of the behaviour of some people who act on behalf of a certain governing political party, but that's by-the-by.

Unfortunately, the resulting tattle-tale in this case will likely go down a treat with the public at large. Afterall, 3.1% of our GDP is generated by scuttle-butt regarding local C-list celebrities.

Graeme beat me to it. The anachronism for me wasn't "feltex" but "test match sized" audiences (where the latter is supposedly meant to be a good thing!).

I do vaguely recall lots of people staying up really late to listen(?) to the Cavaliers games from South Africa.

  • Discussion: Regarding Auckland,

    @ Mikaere

    * While our society is multiethnic, our governance institutions are rooted in a monoculture (that of Britain). Representatives from different ethnic backgrounds does not change the structures, so does not equate to multiculturalism

Such assertions may come as a surprise to the Scots and the Welsh.

I was under the (mis)apprehension that this whole rigmarole was in large part about reducing rates demands. How you can propose a drastic overhaul that reduces democratic representation, council buildings, etc. but achieves no reduction in rates demands (not even a token couple of percent?) ... well, what was the point?

I'll just stick with Waitakere City for better or worse, thanks.

  • Hard News: For Good Friday,

    @ Graeme

So should we be teaching students that light is a particle or a wave?

There is a lot of science with various camps and competing theories. Was a single massive impact the cause of the extinction of the dinosaurs, or sea-level regression, volcanism and the Deccan Traps, or some combination? etc.

I'm not entirely sure of the relevance of such observations.

Wouldn't it be more relevant to ask: should we teach children that things fall because of gravity, or because God intervenes and makes them fall?

  • Hard News: The Cullen investment,

There's no way I'm adding to you-know-who's visitor count for the day/week/month, but a very quick trip to You're Vuws revealed this priceless gem:

People dumped the previous government because among other things it was down by the head with out of tough with reality academics if National appoint him to an SOE position Key needs a good kick in the dusters

Where, prey tell, are the dusters located?

Infant mortality does make for good sport, doesn't it?

He would have been in the Bob Clarkson league of MPs if Georgina Beyer hadn't kicked his arse.

BTW, any wagers on David Garrett being this term's Bob Clarkson?

  • OnPoint: Being a dick about Earth Hour,

It was as if the essense of uselessness took corporeal form, put on a suit and became a lobbyist.

A Lord Sauron for consumerist, pseudo-liberal times? Brilliant!

Here in Canada there is some concern that the switch to CFL bulbs (mandatory from 2012 ... thanks to a Conservative Federal Government) may increase CO2 emissions ... at least in those areas with electricity produced through hydro.

The idea being that the reduced heat output from bulbs (powered by hydro) will be replaced by increased central heating (powered by burning natural gas).

    Some explanation here.

BC Hydro estimates the lighting regulations will increase annual GHG emissions in BC Hydro’s service territory by 45,000 tonnes due to cross-effects. That is, the replacement of inefficient lights with efficient lights that produce less waste heat will lead to increased fossil fuel use for non-electric space heating.

  • Hard News: The Commercial Crunch,

Can anyone confirm the official name of the Auckland-based NRL franchise known as the "Warriors"?

I was under the impression that they sold not just sponsorship rights, but also (sadly) their name, to Vodafone.

Which led to their third name in about 10 years: from the Auckland Warriors to the New Zealand Warriors to the Vodafone Warriors (making them the only club in the competition not to be known by the suburb, city or region in which it is based)

This is confirmed by things like my jersey, and the club's own website, which just say "Vodafone Warriors", and make no mention of New Zealand whatsoever.

However, I see RB refers to them here as the "New Zealand Warriors", as does the Wikipedia website, and the official NRL website gives them the code "NZW".
