  • Cracker: Harder,

I think it'd be wise to hold onto those shares and even invest more. Spanking will become an even more fetishised secret scene, a symbol of resistance and deviance. I predict we'll have the world's spankiest kinkiest population in a decade or so.

There is nothing so alluring as that which is forbidden.

You will be missed - have a great time. And I'm going to be in Brasil for Carnivale in '08 too! Forget Rio, go north to Salvador Bahia, it is the best ! Might see you in Pelo there.

  • Hard News: Shonky scepticism,

Thanks for this post russell - interesting to see how far Furedi's net has been cast.

  • Hard News: Gay, but really not happy,

None of the shows that received that sort of financial support and publicity were Charter ones to my knowledge Robyn, that is the difference.

It's a matter of ethical use of taxpayer funding. But then, this is TVNZ, so maybe that's a silly idea on my part.

    OK, well...

A few questions that could have been answered a while ago would help in this discussion.

Is express getting paid any money for its role in this?

How does TVNZ, or NZOA, justify putting taxpayer dollars into promoting a private business at the expense of other gay centred media?

If the show is rubbish, will express report it?

If express is rubbish will the show report it?

How does using express editorial as a 'portal' meet charter obligations?

  • Hard News: Gay, but really not happy,

One of my main objections to the "reality tv" concept around this bit of progamming is that it's basically giving free taxpayer funded advertising to one branch of the gay media.most of express' foreign copy is lifted striaght off the net, and the local staff has so little journalistic ability the paper is often an embarassment, half full of advertorials.

NZ has a few more gay publications than express, why don't they get the same advantages?

No one has answered the question as to whether express is actually being paid or recompensed in any way for taking part - I sincerely hope not.

But it'll just be another piece of shite that is supposed to 'represent' the gay world. *sigh*

  • Hard News: Aiming for mediocrity. Again.,

Mallard's approach to this has been a huge part of the problem. his usual combative bully boy approach "You've got two weeks to make up your mind!" is a bit like "Buy this record I'll shoot this dog". It just isn't helpful.

There is no accurate costing of the project.
    There is no finalised design.
There has been no meaningful public consultation.

How the hell are we supposed to make up our minds in this situation?

I'm still opposd to it - but show me a breathtaking design (not the dull one in today's herald) and get accurate figures and STOP THREATENING ME, and I might just change my mind.

  • OnPoint: Fisking for Asians,

Great analysis Mr Ng, excellent! And N&S should apologise for publishing such shoddy work - Third-rate racist innumerate journalism from a failed politician.

But what more can we expect from Coddington - she's never been the sharpest knife in the drawer, and Cone is not exactly known for her insight or in-depth analysis either.

  • Island Life: The One Minute Stadium,

Marx once said "The government is simply the executive committee of the bourgeoisie" (or words pretty darn close).

Who really profits here? Taxpayers fork out, and the construction firms, the IRB, the NZRFU, and al their assorted lackeys and parasites, get the goodies. And we in Auckland get a stadium that will hardly ever be full to capacity.

Castells, a sociologist, commented on the way Capital hates having to pay for and provide the infrastructure it so deseperately needs (roads, railways etc) as they are so hard to turn a profit on, but Capital can't survive without them, so it gets the government to force everyone else to pay for it.

Another example coming our way soon I think.
