  • Hard News: Food and drink,

I may be coming to some sort of realisation as to where he got his name.

A butcher that sells dhal and lollies? Mad!

  • Hard News: Food and drink,

This is the part where I confess that for quite some time I thought that Bluff oysters weren't real oysters.

You should probably stay away from mock turtle soup, too.

  • Island Life: Good on ya, Paula,

The media can be a pretty vicious thing when one gets into the middle of it, and I suppose those women are seeing that now in quite how it has been.

Um, is it me, or does this essentially translate as: 'I taught these women what it's like to be on the receiving end of a vicious media beat up'?

Example, a recent headline in the UK stating that 58% of the population "believe" UK troops are dieing because they are ill-equiped.

I take your point, but this is not a good example. The generally shitty state of equipment and the equipment procurement processes in the UK armed forces has been a scandal for decades.

It's only an issue now because larger numbers of squaddies than normal are in a combat environment (in the public eye), and therefore inevitably, larger numbers than normal are dying.

  • Seen Anything Good? Tales from the film…,

Got talking to a German friend of mine at the weekend, who grew up in Germany around that time, and who had seen it as well. He thought it was pretty true to life.

He actually enjoyed the second half more than I did. Apparently the courthouse/trial stuff was quite realistic, insofar as the authorities didn't really know how to deal with overtly policical terrorism in an effective way. They attempted to treat terrorists merely as criminals, and in doing so allowed the terrorists a large measure of control in setting the agenda and general 'playing to the gallery'.

Even though I like my humour to be adventurous and challenging, I found it much too tedious and self-regarding. I too was surrounded by people laughing like a drain but I concluded (rather snottily) that they were the kind of folk who would regard a Roger Hall play as great drama.

I for one think that any criticism of PAS as a forum for a self-selecting band of snobbish, liberal, left-wing elitist intellectuals, is totally unfounded.

  • Hard News: On the Box,

life is actually 3D you know.

Yeah, but the graphics aren't much good. And I only get one playable character. And he's a bit of a dick.

  • Speaker: What Diversity Dividend?,

I've had the disconcerting experience, on more than one occasion, of being asked to concur that, while I may be an immigrant, I'm not an immigrant in the same sense of somebody from Asia, and that we should let in a lot more of me and a lot fewer of them. If nothing else (and obviously there's a lot else) the idea that it should be more desirable and advantegous for New Zealand to establish connections with Italy as opposed to, say, China or India, seems laughable.

It is a bit discombubulating. But then I learned to use my adorable British accent to convince everyone I'm a charming genius, rather than a surly idiot.

    Cultural cringe for the win!

Now I feel like I've been a naughty boy.

I'm trying very hard not to post obvious and smutty 'should a' jokes at this point.

  • Hard News: On Ideas,

Veolia Transport, the rail provider formally known as Connex...

Having had many, how shall I put this, 'sub-optimal customer experiences' with Connex South-Eastern in London, I'd prefer it if they stayed well away from Auckland trains.

I'm more concerned that by relying on Auckland ferries as a primary mode of transport to and from work, I provide money to rampant homophobe Brian Souter.
