  • Summer Holiday,

What's Key's policy on the weather anyway?

It depends on what you mean by "weather" ...

  • Summer Holiday,

How's the holiday? The thing we like here at Public Address System is when you tell us your stories, and we'd like readers to report in from wherever they are through the holiday season: anecdotes, gripes, surf reports, special moments, testaments to natural glory, whatever. We'll keep this feature open for the next few weeks, so when you get connected, think of us, and drop us a line.

It's also worth pointing out that alongside "welfare reform" (which is now having a fairly nasty impact, judging by the new "food security" statistics) - the Clinton policy the Hayekians always argue for - Clinton raised the minimum wage in the 1990s.

Whether or not you want to draw a causal link, the US subsequently enjoyed a notable period of prosperity. At the very least, it didn't hurt.

I agree entirely. The age-old 'a minimum wage prevents [insert unskilled minority here] getting a foot-hold in the labour maket' fallacy was expertly rebutted by Laila.

Yeah, that was the one. She pointed out that the minimum-wage jobs overwhelmingly aren't entry-level ones - they're service jobs, like cleaning hospitals, that aren't generally filled by new entrants to the workforce. Roger essentially didn't have an answer.

His account may have been deleted, but the photos still remain up on MySpace (at least for now)

Oooh - I totally bow to your MySpace ninja-ing ...

I can't wait until you get convicted of a crime, Russell, so that newspapers can pick apart your Public Address posts.

"Sponsored by a whiskey company and a coffee brand? That's practically home-made P if you put them together..."

    Heh.

I just think it's fascinating that these people - it was the same with the supposed JonBenet killer - leave traces in this way. It's becoming a standard line of journalistic inquiry. "They've charged a man with murder!" "Quick - check if he's on MySpace!"

  • Hard News: A little patch of turf,

The MySpace link for the arrested Ipswich murders suspect is now dead. "This user has cancelled the account or had it removed etc.."

It's quite strange that I managed to get it this morning, after all the news reports were already saying it had been cancelled.

This Guardian story has the details.

  • Island Life: Losing the billboard plot,

If the book is reliable on this matter, it would seem that the quality of Ansell's creative output is a little inconsistent. Some of it sounded to lack the deft touch of the Iwi/Kiwi series.

    The poetry, you mean? Dreadful.

But Sam Neill remains a superior cultural emissary for the Land of the Long White Cloud.

    I'm sorry, but WTF?

Sup homie boi... sheeyaz, residizzle apahmins fo blinged honkies?

My point was that crash pads for rich folks don't exactly represent or facilitate a diverse and vibrant street life. Case in point: the stone-dead streets around the old vege market, by the Viaduct.

And your ebonics is terrible ...
