  • Hard News: Aggregate me, baby!,

Sigh ... having marnused myself by forgetting to enable discussion - and wondering glumly why nobody wanted to talk - I figured I should kick this off here ...

  • Hard News: Citizen Key II: The High…,

The new songs that were played last night look to be every bit as good as his last effort (being the awesome Southern Lights).

Ah, and you'd have heard some of those songs if you'd been at the Auckland Great Blend back in July ...

Re starting threads, you can't. You can do so in OurTube and Monitor, but I'm exercising a measure of control for the time being. Everyone is, of course, free to contact me and suggest a thread ...

  • Hard News: Something up with Apple?,

There's more interesting stuff on the iPhone and what might happen next year. From my Listener column:

An American website, Apple Insider, recently noted a crop of trademark applications for the word “iPhone”. Applications have been made on behalf of Apple Computer in Australia, Canada, Britain, Singapore, the European Union and – just last month – New Zealand.

And, bearing in mind that Google CEO Eric Schmidt recently joined Apple's board in what was seen as a signal the two companies pan to co-operate:

Computerworld reporter Juha Saarinen discovered two new internet domain names that point the way. The domains xtragoogle.co.nz and googlextra.co.nz have been registered by Wellington Harbour Properties Ltd, a shell company operated by AJ Park, the intellectual property law firm that Telecom uses for its domain name registrations.

A Telecom spokesperson told Saarinen that any future plans were “commercially sensitive” but conceded that the company’s relationship with Microsoft had come to “a natural point of review”.

An alliance with Google could mean any number of things for Telecom and its Xtra subsidiary, but the registration of the names isn’t conclusive proof that the two are getting together – the barriers to registration are low enough that it is often done on a purely speculative basis. Nonetheless, quite a few people will be watching that space.

YouTube for mobiles was announced this week ...

  • Southerly: The End of Lake Ellesmere?,

Trust you didn't mind me opening a discussion on your post David. I have a great childhood memory of dragging for flounder in Lake Ellesmere, and your post is fascinating and not a little alarming.

  • Speaker: The Hollow Men: Initial Impressions,

So while there might be some whistleblown material in the book, I would presume that some was literally stolen (as an employee) and leaked to Hager, or to someone else who gave it to him.

Actually one thing that becomes clear as you read the book - and I'm surprised it hasn't been commented on more - is that it's clear Hager didn't get all his leaked/stolen material in one fell swoop.

In July 2005 Hager gave the NZ Herald National Party board minutes from Dec 2004 that refuted public assurances that National hadn't hired the scary Australian consultants Crosby/Textor. But he clearly had material generated later than that too.

Oh, and Bassett. What a jerk. P141 of the book covers his contribution to Orewa II (the welfare speech), which seems largely to have consisted of invective against beneficiaries. It's very hard to square his self-serving performance on The Panel yesterday with the material cited in the book.

  • Tri Series League - Blue collar telly,

Have you ever noticed how often Peter Ropati ends up saying the opposite of what he means? I imagine someone whose first language is not English would have some trouble with it.

Of course, a crueller man than I would suggest that it might be going too far to describe English as Mr Ropati's first language either ...

I'd just like to say that I had lunch today with Jonathan Ah Kit, who is, if anything (and apart from being a lovely chap) even geekier than Keith. Phew - New Zealand Chinese geekdom is safe in Keith's absence ...

I should note that on closer inspection I did find John Key in one of the yearbooks and have updated the original post accordingly. He was a keen member of the 1977 debating team.
