  • Speaker: KICK IT! The Wee Fella,

I have no idea what the final will be like.

Spain has played within themselves so far. The Dutch, at times, beside themselves. Spain ought to take it with ease.

Okay, make that almost as bad as Terry.

Also: am a big fan of Puyol. He's slow, but he knows where he needs to be. I was just picturing him with Germans coming at him with speed, he would have looked as bad as Terry. But Germany was never allowed to play their game.

To play football, first you must have the ball.

Actually, no, you don't. Argentina had more of the ball against Germany and lost by 4. Bayern had much more of the ball than Inter in the Champions League final but Inter was in firm control of the game throughout. Spain played effective possession football, and while it was an intensely boring game to watch you have to be impressed. They went in it second favourite but gave themselves the very best chance, and they did it by being smart. Great stuff.

Has anyone else read Memento Mori by Muriel Spark?

    "Memento mori!"
    "Sorry?"
    "Memento mori!"
"I'm going to go back there now and make a note of it."

The patron Saint of Milan, Ambrose (337-397), is buried in a glass sarcophagus in the crypt of the Basilica that bears his name, along with his posse, the saints Protais and Gervais. Last time we were there I gave Joseph (6) the option to see them, but he declined. Yet he was very keen to see the mummies in the Egyptian museum. Could never fathom why he was scared of the former, but not the latter.

But they aren't as slow as England

Are you kidding? You could paint a lifesize portrait of Puyol, he's so slow.

I'm going to have to agree, Spain could be exposed just like Argentina and England. The Netherlands are more the kind of team that could trouble them, but not if they play like they did today - that was, dare I say it, pretty average. Still, I'll be cheering for Spain tomorrow for sure.

I watched some live premiere league football when flying Jet Blue between NYC and Pittsburgh a couple of months ago.

He's flying Lufthansa, which as Blair notes is not known for being very up to date on the technology. The entertainment on my last flight was a live commedia dell'arte performance.

And what was up with subbing Forlan? Were they saving him for the play-off?

I have to assume he was injured. Either that, or Tabarez went loco.

Also: did anyone notice how some Uruguayan players on the sidelines appealed for a hand ball in the last minute of time added on?

Flying Lufthansa so if it is Germany then hopefully updates will be forth coming along the way.

I'm going to make a bold prediction here: after the first morsel of Lufthansa food you're going to start cheering for the team that is not Germany.

Not wearing a cycle helmet has positive outcomes for the public health system, because this results in more fatalities (no cost to the health system, but a negative outcome for costs to society in the form of increased welfare payments)

I see we're slowly inching towards my plan of having most roads abruptly end in cliffs. It would solve most of society's problems. In the long term, it would solve society itself.
