  • Field Theory: Sunshine? Bah!,

Could never get interested in NFL as it seemed more like theatre (bad theatre) than sport.

One thing I always liked about American Football (although it may be American sports, rather than strictly football), is that its followers seem to have a sense of history. The number of times the All Blacks, or Dan Carter or someone else, has had the best ever game, best ever test, or had the the best all-round All Black performance or most superb something-or-other over the last few years have been too numerous to count.

In American Football, the "greatest game ever played" was the 1958 NFL Championship Game between the Baltimore Colts and the New York Giants. And everyone knows it...

  • Southerly: Another One for the Kids,

And I got Stephanie Alexander's Cook's Companion, 2nd edition, which I have coveted ever since it came out.

Cartoon Modern for me. Which is nice - I've been a fan of the 'blog for ages!

  • Hard News: The Interesting Party,

So you're saying it's safe to ditch the "beta" from the masthead?

If gMail is still in a beta phase, I don't see why system should move on :-)

  • Field Theory: A competitive competition,

Wow - everyone completely beat me to it.

Bonus points are about trying to create a spectacle (that sports organisation believe sponsors want, because they in turn believe most punters want that).

Surely three 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw in soccer was about the same thing? People are supposed to not like 1-all draws, and they're perhaps not big fans of 12-3 rugby results :-)

And agree with it or not (I'm not really sure myself) the rationale certainly isn't about ensuring the best side advances.

  • Hard News: The Flashing Question Mark,

Had to post this somewhere, with the reference to Humans.og this seemed appropriate as anywhere. WTF?!!

  • Hard News: The Flashing Question Mark,

You would expect you'd have to do something bad to unleash the Flashing Question Mark

    Really?

Heck, even my new FreeVo crashed yesterday. And I've only had it a day. The old Freeview box you could just turn off then on again from the remote to fix it, but not the new Zinwell - it needed the whole unplug from the wall thing.

Is the command to change the channel that taxing?

  • Public Address Word of the Year 2008,

And I obviously meant to write Obamania there; however, given my typo got more traction than Obamarama (according to the number of google hits), I think even my argument is somewhat vindicated.

  • Public Address Word of the Year 2008,

    So, the list. Thoughts?

    I think it's "Labour lite".

If you're wanting to get rid of some, my suggestion for that would be "Going forward" (apologies to whomever proposed it). It seems pretty generic, not really 2008 etc. That could obviously be recognised with voting (i.e. few will vote for it), but if you're trying to make voting simpler, I give that one the chop.

Maybe also Obamarama. Obamamania got way more traction, and one should be enough.

  • Hard News: Essay Question,

It's more that the Herald was thundering away editorially about the proper practice of Parliament a week ago, but seems fidgety and diffident about criticising National's extraordinary use of urgency.

"National's extraordinary use of urgency" makes sense, but what the Herald was actually talking about today today was how:

John Key has put disparate bills through Parliament under extra-ordinary urgency.

Unfortunately, while the use of urgency may be extra-ordinary, John Key hasn't used extra-ordinary urgency (a mechanism to which the Speaker must independently assent, and which doesn't see Parliament rise at midnight but sit around the clock).

  • Hard News: A news site where you can…,

That's rubbish, If you get fired, s60H does not apply.Unemployed means resigning from or otherwise leaving employment, other than by dismissal. Firing is dismissal.

Not quite, dave, but your (implicit) conclusion is pretty much correct. The 13-week stand down applies if a person:

(a)Has voluntarily become unemployed without good and sufficient reason; or
    (b) Has been in receipt of payments under a scheme and has voluntarily ceased to be part of that scheme without good and sufficient reason; or
    (c) Has lost his or her employment because of misconduct as an employee; or
    (d) Has ceased to be part of a scheme by reason of any misconduct.

It therefore includes dismissal for misconduct, but would not include dismissal for 'not fitting in'.
