That would be vocal vigour, Joe!

Denise L'Estrange-Corbet is now the arbiter of good taste -- really?
Which brings me to a question which has nothing at all to do with Damian's post. How come all the designers who make clothes that only fit stick insects, and who seem to be able to charge exorbitant prices, and who employ shop assistants who look very frightened and/or disgusted if a large and unfashionable looking woman walks through their doors, how come they are all dumpy wee things,? Just asking.

They are very beautiful, but for one who refuses to wear bras, the idea of a corset ain't an attractive one. I find all that stuff highly restricting, but that's just personal taste. I can think of many women of my acquaintance who would be very happy to wear these.

How lovely, Russell. Thanks for that. I loved Kevin Smith - in a "will watch him in anything" kind of way. I enjoyed his aesthetic qualities, and much enjoyed his acting. Lovely, lovely soul.

I'm pretty sure marketeering is illegal.

no matter how much I tried to communicate this, and more - the wondrous things I saw - I was always left with the feeling that I was a Martian talking incomprehensible gibberish.
Christopher, I have a friend who travels very, very widely to places I will never visit - Antarctica, the Amazon, Macchu Picchu, the Falklands, Russia etc. I love hearing of her travels exactly because I will never, ever go to any of those locales. If you are talking about the UK or somewhere people would know quite well, then yes, I would be listening politely but not with huge amounts of interest. And maybe it was the tone you used when you were trying to tell people about your experiences abroad? I don't know, but there will be another reason apart from ignorance, I am sure, that people weren't that interested in your travels. And photos help too. Of interesting things.

I think I might be more fond of Bob than I am of children I'm actually related to.
I hear you, sistah.

By 1991, the place seemed desolate. A new government, no jobs and not much fun.
Oh it was fucking awful. I remember it well. I was so pleased to be home after 4 years away, but oh god, it was a dreary horrid time in space. It was still better than the UK but.
The truth is, you take away our moodiness and you take away a part of us. We live on moody land and if we understood that better we might understand why we are not Australians or Americans and just get on with it.
Oh hallelujah. I've been trying to say this for years, but never had the right words. Thanks for that.
I left too, once, when I was young and wanted adventure. But that wasn't because Auckland sucks.
Yes. Oh yes. And I look forward to reading your update, Russell. Very much.

Welcome home Bob's family. I know you aren't supposed to exploit your kids, but more! More!

Ah, titles. So interesting. From the perspective of one whose dad was a Sir (and whose mother remains a Lady), I don't see the point of them really. My Dad thought the whole thing was a laugh, but I also know that he was a bit chuffed. And I can assure you, he never gave any money to any government. Never really got anything good out of it , except in the UK where these things mean something more than they do here, and even then it was stuff like better tables in restaurants. My mum likes it, but I have to say that people mostly think Lady is her first name, and not a title. So it gives her a little status, but not a lot. The best thing for me personally about the whole thing? Getting to meet Sam Hunt at Government House all those years ago. I still have somewhat of the hots for him.
