  • OnPoint: Budget 2011: A Credible Path to…, in reply to Sacha,

That's rather than removing the recent personal tax cuts from the wealthiest, or reversing massive ETS subsidies to farmers and truckies.

it is kind of like an additional 1% tax on anyone who wants to save for their retirement. that's mean higher earners will be paying more than low earners.

which is a miserly something i suppose.

Can anyone explain how NZ spent $23 billion on transport in 2009?

AFAIK it was committed funding to the roads of national sigificance.

including the one to john and stephen's holiday homes at matakana beach.

When independent retailers (Halal Butchers in Newtown, or any weekend market) are consistently cheaper than the supposed cheapest supermarket in town

we've been using the weekend markets for going on three years. we've very very rarely spent more than $40 for all the fruit and vege we need, and usually that's only when we've bought meat/fish/artisanal foods.

only buying seasonal produce makes a big difference too (although aug/sept are looong months)

It’s a constant refrain from Australian friends who’ve relocated to NZ.

it was my experience when getting back here in 2005.

it's the trouble with being a net exporter of foods i guess.

Like lemmings we’re accepting National’s framing of the budget, and marching even faster to our economic doom.

i'd like to dispute the characterisation of lemmings.

it's myth created by a corporate giant that lemmings actually skitter to their doom, one that served a particular purpose and propaganda on an unwitting audience. apparently the corporate actually had a turntable set up, and were propelling lemmings off a staged cliff! "look!" they cried, "these stupid little fckers have no idea!!"

but then, in writing that, he realises that the analogy actually works very well.

Every economic forecast by the Treasury underestimated the impact of an epic change in the way New Zealanders think about debt and spending.

i had lunch with some forecasters from another-financial-department-that-isn't-treasury on sunday.

i told them i was glad it was them we were lunching with, because if it was treasury bods we'd have half as much food and have to pay twice as much for it.

    they laughed.

Labour’s failure to competently articulate a real alternative will end up with a lot more people than just Che looking where else to place their ‘x’ on the ballot paper.

yup. and piss-taking aside, Green is the most viable alternative.

once they ditch The Kedge they could be very respectable.
