Hard News: Getting to the bottom of…, in reply to
Nokia began losing market when they did not respond to personal communicators encroaching into the internet
They were listening to the mobile operators, who only saw voice call revenue and didn’t care for the anarchic world of apps and software. (Remember Telecom pushing 3G as a vehicle for video calling and press-to-talk – what happened to that?)
(And for mobile opcos, smartphones have brought mostly pain. Voice and SMS revenues are declining, and they aren’t making enough on data to offset this).

What interests me is what will happen when growth stops?
The "customer" section of the world is already spending as much on toys as they ever will, and they're getting poorer. So how can companies like Foxconn continue to grow - and normally, growth doesn't just slow down nicely, it reverses.
Once all these people start being laid off and sent back to the farm, what will they do? They don't have any employment protection, they don't have the right to stay in the cities without jobs and they don't have the outlet of voteocracy to vent their frustration by voting the other team in.

Almost all local-body politicians *have* a political alignment (is it even possible not to) it's just that they mostly don't declare it.
With politicians standing as independents, all anyone can do is not vote for them. If they stood for parties, you could not vote for that party (inducing them to select better candidates in future) or alternatively join the party and participate in candidate selection.

So what do we do when the Mayor & Deputy Mayor deliberately lie to the people?
There must be a remedy.Don't vote for them.
Find out whether local government candidates are Tories (they lie about this too, but tend to leave clues, like having stood for the National Party a few years prior) and avoid voting for them.

Like I said upthread, low hanging fruit.
The FBI could shutdown Google and arrest its staff on much the same grounds, but they won't because Google is a public company with shares held by many institutions that in turn own senators and congressman.
I'm sure that if Dotcom had thought to spend a few mil buying a congressman and issuing a few shares to well connected US VC outfits, he'd have had no troubles.

how one would go about it
I guess you'd start by asking your local ACT MP for advice.

I expect he considered our relaxed approach to white collar crimes such as insider trading and securities fraud rather attractive.
Unfortunately he didn't realize that those rules only apply when your victims are little old ladies and/or the NZ taxpayer. Not the US government's owners.

Everyone who gets bail is at some risk of flight or reoffending. That has to be weighed against the right not to be jailed without conviction.
It seems that there is a good chance that Schmidt's conduct won't amount to an extraditable offence in NZ. The US authorities may well be using the criminal process to disrupt his activities and deter others rather than having an expectation of a conviction.

No, one is necessary for the other. If councils were given greater autonomy without a framework of rights, they (backed by mainstreamist voters) would use it to attack and exploit the less privileged. Blocking this enables them to have the autonomy without the exploitation.
