Is there a mayor anywhere in NZ who isn't at least partly a dick?
I'd suggest:
- abolish the role of mayor
- have a council leader elected by councillors, ensuring they have majority support
- elect councillors by a fair voting system similar to MMP
- enable communities to chose their own governance framework rather than imposing this centrally
- balance greater independence for councils with an enforceable requirement to comply with human rights, economic social and cultural rights and the Treaty.
- entrench the independence of communities beyond central government intervention -

They are pure evil, but were the most comprehensive (and presumably vaguely accurate) article I could find on the event.

Parker last week announced an $80,000 review of the council's communication problems by independent communciations consultant Felicity Price
Isn't that running his re-election campaign on ratepayers money?

MU are low hanging fruit. Sleazy name, sleazy people (yachts, mansions (lairs?), guns, previous convictions).
It's like Switched On Gardener getting busted whilst "mainstream" agricultural suppliers can sell exactly the same things without consequences.

BCCI - only time it's happened, to my knowledge. I'm not sure if BCCI had any business that *wasn't* criminal, at least in the eyes of some jurisdiction. They were also eventually insolvent.

There aren't any electorate recall powers in NZ. Think before you vote. If you don't like any councillor, you've got a chance (if you live in their ward) to vote them out next year.
People forget that councillors are not employees, they are representatives. If people want to vote in an awkward sod, that's their right.

I'm not sure how to think on this. One one hand, all billionaires are predicate thieves from the people and should be flung in jail, at least until they disgorge their ill-gotten gains.
On the other hand, I don't think NZ should be acting as America's colonial policeman. I believe that (a bit ironically) the Germans refuse to extradite to the US, presumably because they don't consider them to have a functioning justice system.
Also, if Schmidt is guilty of money laundering, is the NZ state complicit in this by accepting a cheap $10mln loan as payment for residence? Will we see Key, English or at least the head of Immigration arrested next?

I think the problem BDO lineups suffer most is nostalgia
Yeah. As in <insert 50/60/70 year old rocker here>'s spent his pension and needs more drug money. Book him for the BDO.
