Islander -- just a reply to your comment a few pages back. I'm pretty sure that the paper I alluded to only exists in paper form (possibly even a book!), but I may have an electronic copy on an old Mac formatted CD. However, with the power of technology I should be able to digitise it.

I saw some unpublished analysis that showed a very high correlation between answering "New Zealander" and experiencing redness of the neck.

I can point you to a study that used the old census question with Pākehā, and those who used the write in options knew fewer Māori words. Not quite the same as redness of the neck, but perhaps less open.

I keep reading it as parenteral correction. It's unclear whether that makes more or less sense than the original.

  • Hard News: On the Waterfront,

A decent portion (some is needed for access) of the outside of them can be used for something entirely different. The Wellington Stadium has University of Otago offices in it, and I think conference facilities. The new Dunedin one is set to have a health centre and a gym in it (and possibly a cafe, I can't remember).

The caketin is not a great example of this. The only time I've been to Otago's facility there it was desolate and eerie. One of the functions that had been there had moved out. The space was not particularly pleasant, lunch had to be provided because there was no way that you could get to anywhere to get food, eat, and get back in a sensible timeframe. I think the following year new space at the medical school was used, and by contrast, you could wander out to newtown, grab coffee, food etc., and altogether better experience. I think this is partly because the caketin is kinda nowhere.
The new Dunedin stadium may be better, but they're talking about about a serious amount of additional space and facilities, rather than the the stuff underneath the caketin that seems pretty token. If the plaza feel gets pulled off, then it could work much better in Dunedin, and there are cafes and stuff, all the better. Also, if the path round the harbour links back into the stadium area it might work.

  • Hard News: On the Waterfront,

I think perhaps the most compelling reason for the upgrade is because everybody needs somewhere to get on a boat

  • Hard News: On the Waterfront,

As a surprisingly regular user of Auckland's ferries (for someone who lives in Dunedin), I can only support doing something better with this space. I end up on the waterfront every time I'm in Wellington I think and love it. But currently what passes for a positive waterfront experience in Auckland is buying gelato and hoping that there is a shitty plastic chair free on that small strip along the front of the ferry building.

  • Speaker: The Telecom XT Discussion,

There is some information on wikipedia about it. The iPhone works pretty well on the XT network, but anticipate charging it daily (even if you barely use it). There are also some cheapish 3G phones on trademe, and likely to be more with the arrival of the 3GS

  • Hard News: Ups and Downs,

Eeep. I just realised that there is actually a had not have (hadn't of) in the last sentence! Never noticed it before.

  • Hard News: Ups and Downs,

Not had have, but the have/of thing always reminds me of Bill Manhire's Declining the Naked Horse

The naked horse came into the room.
The naked horse comes into the room.
The naked horse has come into the room.
The naked horse will be coming into the room.
The naked horse is coming into the room.
The naked horse does come into the room.
The naked horse had come into the room.
The naked horse would of come into the room
again if we hadn't of stopped it.

  • Hard News: Rodney's Folly,

Only the mail surveys were concerned with ratepayers. The phone survey used random digit dialling. And I think indirectly, students pay a lot of rates, as both tenants and consumers.

I don't think these surveys in aggregate do clearly imply that the council doesn't have a mandate; but it is enough that it should have prompted them to care.
I do wonder how many of our councillors see people like Calvin Oaten write a letter in opposition, and then think it must be a good idea.
