  • Hard News: Drugs and Sex,

So, did you hold your nose and scull the bottle in one go?

From memory it's still less than one morphine sulphate tablet.
Opiates are randomly brilliant anti-tussives. They have an effect in the central nervous system that suppresses the cough reflex, rather than soothing the throat. Another advantage of Gee's Linctus (the morphine cough preparation) is that it is sweetened with honey, and it tastes delicious.

They provide legal means to enforce the status quo public position.

I think the date of women's voting rights in Switzerland (1971/1990) I mentioned on the previous page pretty clearly reflects that...

switzerland is not famous for its bad government either

It sort of is. It has tended to have a bit of a drag on change. The poster-boy example for this (which may overstate its negative effects) is that women didn't get the vote in Switzerland until 1971.

One hardy bunch of men in a half canton held out until 1990, at which point a federal court argued that because women were citizens they had to let women vote.

  • Island Life: I'm Henry. Fly Me.,

Another thought on Jetstar. I think it's less about the number of planes and more about the maths. Airlines jealously guard the formulas they use, but you'd think RULE NUMBER ONE would be to set your parameters a little less aggressively on entry into a new market. I'm not against overbooking per se, but if you don't understand the market and have a rough idea on no-shows, you'd think you'd start cautiously, precisely to avoid bad publicity.

I know in Europe it's common for people to book 1 Euro flights THEN consider whether they actually want to fly, but I'm not sure New Zealanders have that mentality yet.

Giovanni, I'm rusty on this stuff, and it's time for Dunedin drinks. I mean really, what sort of a late Friday afternoon question is that!

  • Hard News: .... and the Rock 'n' Roll,

Exporting video is a curious business. It can be hard to strike a balance between file size and quality. I did a couple of smaller files, but they made me unhappy ...

Windows native support for video codecs is pretty dire. I discovered to my chagrin that even a Sony video camera recording in the DVD standard MPEG2-TS isn't default in Windows Media Player.

Rocking in the freeworld is AVC1/AAC, and I think AVC1 is the same as h264, which I think is pretty good compression. But there are so many possibilities, it's very easy to get lost!

I wouldn't do that to you! I'll take the file off later today.

I was impressed with the speed of its arrival. And was just about to dust off my transcoding software!

  • Hard News: Drugs and Sex,

70% heritable is much higher than I thought.

The accepted wisdom was about 25%. Would be interesting to look at the new evidence and see if the heritability is being compounded by environmental issues, similar to Jim Flynn's argument that genetic predispositions attract a certain type of environment, inflating heritability estimates.
