  • Up Front: A Real Character, in reply to Russell Brown,

It’s welcome that they appear in fiction now, but it’d also be nice if they were allowed to be more different.

Have you read "The speed of dark" Russell? I enjoyed the book but was never quite sure if it was "right".

  • Up Front: A Real Character,

Gotta say very surprised to see River Tam on that list. She always struck me a the loony psycho character. That she happened to also be a girl always felt incidental to me, she is a character first. That she is the subject of multiple rescues makes perfect sense because she is the insane one and the subject of a system wide hunt by the authorities.

Did I mention that Serenity is one of my favourite movies and I might be a little bit one-eyed :).

This is not a subject I feel terribly competent to comment on but my favourite female characters in fiction, or anywhere for that matter, are favourite characters first. To me it is about whether the character rings true and too often female characters are so poorly realised that they don't ring true. To be honest most times that happens the male characters are just as bad.

That's why slamming Padme for being a terrible female character is so pointless, none of Lucas' characters have any depth so what make Padma any shallower.

Because working with drainage made you think of The Herald?

  • Hard News: Media Mathematics, in reply to Russell Brown,

In the end, she hung up on me with the parting shot, “You’re just being pedantic.” Ahhh . . . yes!

This is such a common response from senior journalists.

If I’m chatting at a BBQ with a glass of wine with my friends I don’t need to be precise about my numbers.

If I’m arguing with my father (who’s dead) I can just outright lie, he certainly will.

But if I’m publishing my work, my numbers better be right, at that point someone else is relying on me being right. Hell I’m paid to be right or if I’m not certain, to be precise about my language and define exactly how uncertain I am (that’s statistics).

If a journalist says they don’t need to be pedantic then aren’t they also saying they don’t need to be paid any more? Because at that point they are not doing their job.

  • Capture: Cats Love Cameras, in reply to Russell Brown,

Are you sure he isn't trying to soften the harsh angles created by the corner of the deck and the railing. It is clearly much more aesthetically pleasing with the cat in place.

    The motorists give way.

    That'll work in New Zealand.

the metal sensors are. If you align your tyres along one of those lines

Unless you have a carbon fibre and plastic bike

But also lean over and push the pedestrian crossing button that way you stop the cars going across in front of you.

when you get so damn hostile

    boggle

Yes I'm angry another person was killed. I personally believe there was no way a legal case could have been made against the driver. I said that in the first post to which you replied so calmly and collectedly.

I also believe it is unlikely the driver took the care he could have or should have when he exited his car. I accept there is a chance that I am wrong but I believe the probability is that I'm right. I am also well aware that he feels like shit now.

I am aware that the multiple parties could have acted to make the death less likely.

I personally believe nobody, not the council, not the drivers in Auckland, not the ratepayers, not the voters will ACTUALLY DO ANYTHING TO CHANGE THE FUTURE. Sorry but apparently shouting is acceptable.

    That makes me cry.

So you can have your rational discussion about a needless deaths that will be repeated. Personally I'm comfortable about not being rational about such things.

Sorry Russell, I took a deep breath and still went nuclear.

    I'll go watch cricket now.

But I cannot honestly guarantee that I would have done better in that particular situation than that driver did.

That's what I'm saying as well. Both things are true. It was a bad parking space because it is unlikely every driver will take the care needed.

    Don't design bad parking spaces.

Don't open your door without checking for other humans.

You design roads with the knowledge people make mistakes but you also ask people to not make mistakes.
