Up Front: The Aunties, in reply to
the day after I’ve delivered a lengthy opinion on something she’ll ask me with all innocence, “What do you think about this, dear?” And then give every appearance of listening with interest to my reply.
Or she is simply determining that you believe that thing two days in a row :). Of course that would mean she actually did listen the first time and was merely messing with your head.

I know several were going down to get a plant
Yeah I have an aunt-in-law who grows her own tobacco. There are limits to how much you are allowed to grow but otherwise seems a reasonable option.
If you accept there will be addicts or simply people who make that choice then letting them grow their own seems remarkably sensible. And yes that statement could be quite general :).
The big tobacco companies are a much worse evil than home growers.

Yeah the point is, it's a clear cost benefit analysis for the dairy. Either it is worthwhile to put the tobacco under the counter because it increases sales of bread milk etc OR it isn't worthwhile.
Bitching and moaning that this legislation that is, by every measure, going to save the country money, might shave his profit is just a high pitched whine.
He is pretending he has no options and that is patently not true.

"If I have to reposition my stock in drawers under the counter it will mean major expense and disruption, as this area is presently used for other purposes."
Or you could ... like ... stop selling tobacco

I seldom have constructive advice or practical help
I always have advice and practical help ... it took me years to learn to stop er well reduce my inclination to give such advice.
Turns out most times my sympathy is far more valuable - that and I'm an excellent hugger.
As for Aunties, nope all of them were in The Netherlands as is true for most 1st generation dutch/kiwis. For me it was the circle of friends, mine and my parents, at the nudist club where we spent every summer.
I think though that there is a difference between relatives and those close family friends. You have to tolerate the relatives, with all their weaknesses and racism and sexism ... they are still of your blood and part of your life even if they are not close.
But the friends, are friends because they have similar ideologies and humour and joie de vivre. They are people like you and who like you. Having those people nearby to influence and help your children grow, what more could you hope for from a friend.

Extremely appreciative, however, when the humans lay paper all over the floor
Very helpful because you always know the exact reference you need now, is under the cat.
