  • Hard News: A week being a long time in politics,

If we owned massive state assets in high fashion retailing

Well, the government seems to consider running a bar an essential function of state.

  • Hard News: A week being a long time in politics, in reply to Kyle Matthews,

If you've got Maori/NAT (with/without ACT or UF) on one hand and Labour/Green on the other, then either the right or left will have a majority (or it'll be a dead tie).

It's hard to see how the Greens would go to the right, when they could form a government on the left.

The scenarios where they could be in play would be:
    - NZF get in, and take an asymmetric stance where they'll vote against Labour on C&S but abstain with National.
    - Mana get a couple of seats and Goff refuses to form a Labour/Green/Mana government, even though one would have a majority.

  • Hard News: The Solemnity of the Day, in reply to izogi,

Brits are theoretically eligible to vote for 20 years from leaving the country.

But you have to register every year (no reminders) and have to use the ballot papers sent, which typically arrive by mail a week before election day, giving you very little time to get them back. The only way to vote reliably is to have a proxy (who has to live in your old electorate) vote for you.

  • Hard News: The Solemnity of the Day,

If you don't have laws against it, you'll have teams of people screaming at you at the polls about how Labour's all Communists, or National's all Fascists, amongst much uglier alarmist nonsense.

As they do in all the countries that don't have such laws, or where such laws are forbidden by overarching rights of free speech?

I think you can have rules against the waylaying of voters without going so far as to curtail opt-in media like Twitter.

  • OnPoint: Brain Drain Et Cetera, in reply to George Darroch,

It depends what you put on departure/arrival cards as to your intentions, right?

If you put that you're off on holiday for a few weeks, they don't count you as PLT,

  • Hard News: The Solemnity of the Day,

    publishes, or distributes, or broadcasts

    But not communicates, right?

It isn't illegal to discuss the election with a friend in person? Or on the phone? Or by email? Or to email a number of friends? Or to DM on twitter? At what point does a message become a broadcast?

What about factual material that might influence voters? Do bookstores have to remove the works of Nicky Hagar and the like?

Also, s.197 doesn't purport to be extra-territorial, right? So if I'm overseas on election day, I can produce a stream of political diatribes without risking prosecution, even on return.

Does it count as "rolling" if Banks is (as is very possible) ACTs sole MP? Surely Brash can't remain leader-outside-parliament for 3 years?

Or, if they haven't given him enough space, he could just shorten it to:

  • Hard News: The perils of political confidence, in reply to BenWilson,

    Absolutely.

Except that Labour are presenting things as "nothing much wrong, just need a few tweaks and a change of faces". There are some bits of a plan, but no acknowledgement that we have a bit of a problem.

Ok, so we don't see the issues that Europe does right now, but that's on a pretty slender thread - if people in Guangzhou etc. suddenly decide to stop buying expensive yoghurt, or get some of their own cows, we're screwed.
