  • Hard News: #NetHui: it's all about you,

My Mother, bless her, told me that her favorite party game she invented was "Carpet Picking". She would give all the kids at the party a brown paper bag and instruct us to fill the bags with anything we could find on the carpet, usually bits of cake or some-such Birthday detritus. The person to fill the bag first got a lolly. The game would progress by round after round with empty bags until...
    She got a clean carpet.

  • Hard News: #NetHui: it's all about you, in reply to Lilith __,

I reckon she'll be a millionaire before she's 20, providing she gets some pay rises along the way. :-)

And they would have to be substantial ones at that.
Inflation might help but then the million will be worth less. In fact....
If you were on the average wage, here in NZ and not taking inflation into account, you would have to work your entire working life of 50 yrs to net that amount after minimal expenses like food and little else.
Kinda makes you look sideways at them millionaires don't it?.

  • Southerly: Tower Insurance Have Some Bad…, in reply to Lucy Telfar Barnard,

After trolling through pages of meaningless guff at CCC district plan site I have found nothing regarding either Solar Panels or Windmills.
    There is this…

2.2.5 Appearance of buildings and sites
    Updated 22 May 2006

In areas adjoining an important public open space, as shown on planning map 39F, the erection of any new buildings, or external alterations to any existing buildings (excluding demolition), or the use of any part of a site not undertaken in a building, shall be a discretionary activity with the exercise of the Council’s discretion limited to visual appearance

As for needing Planning permission for putting any energy saving device on your own roof I would tend toward this approach…

When I was a kid, I used to pray every night for a new bike. Then I realised, the Lord doesn’t work that way. So I just stole one and asked Him to forgive me … and I got it!

  • Southerly: Tower Insurance Have Some Bad…, in reply to Lucy Telfar Barnard,

    - standard available wind generators would likely require building (possibly resource) consent,- solar hot water needs building consent if it goes on your roof; - presumably roof-mounted photovoltaic would also require building consent; - relying on wind and sun for household energy needs usually achieved in conjunction with wet-back hot water. Depending on your clean air zone and existing solid fuel heating, installing a wetback is either completely forbidden or requires resource consent.

    Rubbish.
Especially as the Council is abdicating all responsibility for the welfare of those affected.
"Standard available wind generators" no such animal. Let's see said council standing in the way of one of these babies a snip, I may say, at $999.
AND... who could deny anyone having These cuties strapped to your new roof.
Damn the Council and the sewers they came from, septic tanks for all I say...

  • Southerly: Tower Insurance Have Some Bad…, in reply to BenWilson,

all our insurance companies would need to be bailed out by the government when something big happened and then it’s not insurance, it’s just the government paying for everything again.

People seem to forget that "The Government" is us, or the people we elect to represent us and that the money we spend within our country is merely numbers on "bits of paper" (actually, these days it is merely bits).
The History of Civic Assurance shows us that we would have had no problem if the greed heads had not taken over the temple. We are constantly told that the Private Sector is far better at making profits than the Public Sector, mainly because the Public Sector doesn't need to make a profit. We are constantly told that the Government should not be in any kind of business and that "Hard Earned Money"™ should stay in the pockets of those that grabbed it, Government should allow those that can afford to buy the countries assets to rape the citizens of Aotearoa for their own "Unjust Enrichment".
I beseech you all to seek out and watch this enlightening documentary.

I don’t understand why the reinsurers would be able to threaten legal action against the ChCh council.

It's what they do, that's why...
    From PWC (pdf)

    The Council on Litigation Management
    (www.litmgmt.org) estimates that
    annual outside legal expense, inclusive
of claims, is in excess of $30 billion for
    their member companies alone. Some
portion of this expense is a necessary
and integral cost of doing business
    because it provides, among other
    things, a mechanism for dispute
    resolution and protection against
    unjust enrichment.

And we don't want none of that "unjust enrichment" do we?
$30 Billion eh? just on fighting claims, the cost of compensating the victims of the 'quakes pales into insignificance against the numbers these vultures deal with.
$3.3 trillion back in 2004 with an average growth rate of around 10% per anum

To illustrate the steady growth in the global insurance industry in recent times, in 2004, global insurance premiums grew by 9.7% to reach $3.3 trillion (as against the 11.7% growth in 2003). While life insurance premiums grew by 9.8% during the year due to rising demand for annuity and pension products, non-life insurance premiums grew by 9.4%.

Combine the Insurers with the Usurers and by 2008 that number was up around $US100 trillion
It's not just the Kingdom of Denmark that has that stench of rottenness, it's Global baby...
I just wonder how many Cantabrians will be voting for the man from Merrill Lynch this time around?. or will they be more in favour of Merrilly Lynching the smiley one and his pals?.

  • Southerly: One Hundred and Thirty-one…, in reply to David Haywood,

But at the high extreme of traffic density (e.g. urban Japan) the same amount of ‘selfish’ driving by each person would manifest itself in (almost) constant incidents, and the traffic would quickly become snarled. The only way that traffic can flow in a reasonable manner is for all participants to have an unspoken agreement to act (apparently) ‘unselfishly’.

Also the case in London. I found it strange when I first arrived here that drivers would not let cars out of side streets, even when in a traffic light queue. It may be the most annoying trait of NZ drivers that they seem to think they own any bit of the road that they can squeeze their car onto.
Islander, most of what you say about Kiwi social behaviour is true, until they get behind a wheel, then it's F**K you Mate...
