  • Hard News: The Message, in reply to Julie Fairey,

haven’t seen the Pt Chev maps specifically (and I couldn’t tell you if I could because it was all in confidential) but two points

I was going on the notified plan from 2013. Is that the wrong one to be looking at?

That features an expansion of mixed housing urban and very little single house, but, away from the main road, nearly all mixed housing suburban.

  • Hard News: The Message,

Couple of comments on the Orsman scare-story.

Point Chevalier, where I live, is the first suburb named. But if it's solely a matter of some "single housing" being rezoned to "mixed housing suburban", it's going to make virtually no difference.

If you look at the map in the notified plan, you'll see there's relatively little zoned single housing anyway and what there is seems pretty arbitrary.

We're already mixed housing suburban like most of the neighbourhood. Should I be hyperventilating with fear?

FWIW I seldom heard a bad word about Jackie Blue when she was an MP.

I think she's pretty happy as a Human Rights Commissioner now though.

  • Hard News: The Message,

    From the Herald:

Labour MP Phil Goff has announced he is standing as an independent candidate for the Auckland mayoralty, ending months of speculation about his political future.

Former Green Party member and council employee David Hay is also standing.

Other confirmed candidates are Orakei Local Board member Mark Thomas, right-wing candidate Stephen Berry and activist Penny Bright.

It remains to be seen whether a heavyweight candidate from the right can still be found following new ticket, Auckland Future, getting the backing of the National Party. Career businesswoman and Xero New Zealand managing director, Victoria Crone, has also said she is considering running.

Of the others confirmed as standing, Mark Thomas seems the most capable. Berry and Bright will make their usual noise from the margins. Has David Hay rejoined the Greens after his one-year expulsion?

FWIW, I think he shouldn’t do both jobs. Undermines both of them, and increases public contempt for democracy. And to be clear, Goff hasn’t said he would.

Goff campaigning while being an incumbent MP will annoy the right greatly. It won’t make any great difference to the result though, even if they

He'll take a leave of absence for the actual campaign, but it's daft to expect him to resign and force a byelection a year out from the Auckland local body elections.

He could even continue to do both jobs if elected mayor, but he clearly won't do that.

  • Legal Beagle: Voting in the Flag Referendum,

Some people have been puzzled by the fact that the Lockwood flags and Red Peak are being sold by their creators.

All entrants agreed to sign over the copyright in their designs to the Crown if they were selected for the short list.

This makes the shortlist finalists subject to the same rules as apply to the current flag – which allow anyone to make, use or sell a copy so long as they respect the design. So they're allowed to sell copies of their own designs – and so is anyone else.

Maybe someone didn’t get the VIP press pass to the live event they expected. :-)

I was right at the back with my people: the middle-aged media white guys. (Christie, Reid, Greive, Phin and James from George FM)

Back in the day I used to get a table halfway up the room with the commercial radio people. As Duncan put it on The Spinoff:

We kinda knew that we were hanging onto our VIP status by a thread.

From today’s Darcy Clay tribute/95bFM party at Real Groovy. Buzz from Voom (‘Joelene’), Mikey Havoc (‘Jesus I was Evil’) and Emily Littler (an amazing version of ‘All I Gotta Do’ that made me so happy).

This was really fun and lovely.
